It catches me off guard every year. The fact that this state can get whiter. 🤷‍♀️ 🤭 #utwx

The seasonal anomalousness, as well sheer spatial extent, of upcoming record-shattering Western U.S. heatwave is genuinely startling. This will be associated with, by far, the strongest ridge ever observed during (at least) any Nov-Mar month. #CAwx #AZwx #NMwx #NVwx #UTwx #COwx
Map, from polarwx.com, of ECMWF model's forecast for 500mb heights later this week and their rank relative to the historical record for March over North America. A giant pink blob is visible over western North America, indicating an absurdly large area of record-breaking 500mb GPH.

A serious and still-escalating wildfire outbreak is now underway across interior West, and has today expanded beyond NV & UT into western CO & AZ/NM. Extreme fire behavior and rapid spread is widespread; adverse conditions expected for 7+ days. #UTwx #COwx #AZwx #NMwx [Thread]
Current satellite snapshot of wildfires throughout the Western U.S. Each significant heat signature is circled in yellow. There are well over a dozen such circles.

An even more remarkable map at 4pm local time as additional locations reach/break all-time temperature records in Montana, Wyoming, and Utah. Notably, multiple locations in eastern MT are in 110-115F range, & 109F breaks Salt Lake City's all-time record (again). #UTwx #MTwx #WYwx
4pm coolwx.com map showing locations with record-breaking temperatures. There are numerous such locations across the Northern Rockies and Northern Plains into the Upper Midwest.

An even more ridiculously warm day across most of the central and western United States, with numerous locations seeing not only calendar date record highs but in many cases all-time December monthly records. Wow. 🫠 #AZwx #NMwx #TWwx #COwx #OKwx #WYwx #KSwx #NEwx #UTwx
Map from coolwx.org showing locations currently experiencing record highs. Red dots are daily record highs; pink dots are monthly record highs. There are numerous red and pink dots in the central and western United States.

Multi-day stretch of critical fire weather is likely across Great Basin, extending eastward at times (into Rockies) & westward (into E CA/OR/WA & ID). Scattered dry thunderstorms, plus hot temps & gusty wind, will ignite new wildfires & accelerate existing ones. #NVwx #UTwx #COwx
Fire weather risk map for today from NOAA SPC. It depicts multiple hazards across western U.S., with dry thunderstorm thread centered over Great Basin and hot temp/gusty wind thread more widespread across Western interior.

Evening satellite snapshot depicts marked increase in SW U.S./N Mexico wildfire activity, largely aligning w/Red Flag Warning across Great Basin eastward into Central Rockies. Most notable: multiple large fires in UT, plus #ConnerFire south of Carson City, NV. #CAwx #NVwx #UTwx
Screenshot of current satellite imagery over western United States and Mexico, with various large wildfires denoted by red circles. Large smoke plumes emanating from these fires are also visible.

I would expect to see overall persistence, and probably expansion/intensification, of drought centered over lower CO River basin (expanding further into SoCal and into southern Rockies), esp. given strong anomalous late spring/early summer warm signal. #CAwx #AZwx #UTwx #COwx
Current Drought Monitor image. It depicts a substantial drought centered on the Desert SW, though it extends into Southern CA and some portions of Southern Rockies.
Late spring/early summer temperature prediction for the United States from the C3S superensemble. It suggests a high likelihood of much warmer than average temperatures during this period over essentially the entire West, especially away from the immediate coast, during this period.

Additionally, I would expect to see early emergence (or re-emergence, in some places) of unusually elevated wildfire activity in SoCal plus AZ/NM and possibly southern portions of UT/NV/CO by spring. #CAfire #CAwx #AZwx #NMwx #UTwx #NVwx

There is a risk of significant flash flooding in parts of interior SW today as deep tropical moisture associated w/remnants of East Pacific #HurricanePriscilla interacts w/jet streak associated w/an incoming trough. Risk will be highest central/northern AZ and SW UT. #AZwx #UTwx
Excessive precipitation (i.e., flash flood risk) outlook from NOAA's WPC for today (10/6/2025) as visualized on pivotalweather.com. It shows a broad region of slight risk over the interior U.S. Southwest, and a two substantial lobes of moderate risk (i.e., second-highest tier) over northern Arizona and southern Utah, respecitvely.
