Farmington, NM once again hit 102° today, breaking a 74-year-old record high. Bigger deal is: - 3rd 102° high in a row - Tying the August all-time record high for the third day in a row - Longest stretch of triple digit highs in August - 8th 100°+ day this year #NMwx

The seasonal anomalousness, as well sheer spatial extent, of upcoming record-shattering Western U.S. heatwave is genuinely startling. This will be associated with, by far, the strongest ridge ever observed during (at least) any Nov-Mar month. #CAwx #AZwx #NMwx #NVwx #UTwx #COwx
Map, from polarwx.com, of ECMWF model's forecast for 500mb heights later this week and their rank relative to the historical record for March over North America. A giant pink blob is visible over western North America, indicating an absurdly large area of record-breaking 500mb GPH.

Another huge dust storm, caused by extreme wind event (w/ gusts to 100 mph locally!) emanating from sources in S. NM, W. TX, and Chihuahua and spreading eastward across Southern Plains. Also some wind-driven wildfire smoke plumes embedded, w/more likely overnight. #TXwx #NMwx

A serious and still-escalating wildfire outbreak is now underway across interior West, and has today expanded beyond NV & UT into western CO & AZ/NM. Extreme fire behavior and rapid spread is widespread; adverse conditions expected for 7+ days. #UTwx #COwx #AZwx #NMwx [Thread]
Current satellite snapshot of wildfires throughout the Western U.S. Each significant heat signature is circled in yellow. There are well over a dozen such circles.

As cold storm which brought heavy rain & even severe thunderstorms to CA eastward, it will likely cause a major tornado outbreak across Deep South on Sat. But first, it will generate a "near-historic" fire weather event across Southern Plains on Fri. #CAwx #NMwx #TXwx #OKwx
Map of jet stream-level winds late Friday night, when the fire weather event over the Southern Plains will be evolving into a tornado threat over the Deep South, depicting a very pronounced trough over the Central US. Map from ECMWF model.
