It is important to recognise that technical language (such as in use in mathematics) is designed to help *those already inside the subject*, and not those who are trying to get in.
Learning proper terminology and learning proper concepts are not necessarily best done simultaneously.

Gave my Y9s this diagram for #MathsToday. Picked a few numbers for a,b,c and then their task was to work out all the lengths and angles.
Next lesson we'll cut it out and reassemble it and they'll discover that they've secretly been doing 3D trig!

Watched BBC's new quiz "The Wisdom of the Crowds".
Big turn-offs for me:
1. The intro. The correct way to refer to him is "the *eugenicist* Francis Galton". Or, preferably, not at all.
2. The questions. No distinction as to which average was being used.

I hope that we can make mathematics more like a walkable city. Step back from building highways through parks and neighbourhoods. Focus on making a livable human environment, and regulate slop so that it doesn't destroy it. But this is getting too long already.

Surveyor's Tradition Problems.
Q1&2 are similar, Q3&4 are similar, etc, etc.
Always a risk writing resources when you're no longer in the classroom to experience the outcome (be it glory or mayhem) ... but hopefully this is of use or of interest to some.

I think the maths historians would probably call this a 'surveyors' problem. Am in the process of making a sheet of them ... unless anyone already has such a thing.
(The 40 and the 72 are the areas of the rectangles formed by the respective diagonals).
