In #MathsToday Yr 2 #AlevelMaths explored modulus functions using this MEI desmos activity. Some good discussions were had and they surprised themselves with how much they could work out. When the lesson ended and they hadn’t quite finished a student told me it was fun and he didn’t want to stop 😀

In #MathsToday Yr 1 #AlevelMaths proved the quadratic formula using an underground maths card sort, did some explorative work on key features of quadratic functions using factorised form and completing the square and then completed DrAustin finding quadratic equations from their graphs. This is always one of my favourite #ALevelMaths lessons - introducing infinite geometric series. Y12 surprised me this year by generally preferring a geometric approach over algebraic tricks - usually it’s the other way round! #MathsToday

Complex numbers practice in L6 #FurtherMaths #ALevelMaths #MathsToday.

Two questions: a quadratic equation and a pair of simultaneous equations where the coefficients are complex.

They are:

1. Solve (1-2i)z^2-(3+4i)z-9+13i=0

2. Solve (2+i)z+(4-i)w=21-i and (1+3i)z+(2+5i)w=12+18i

In #mathstoday #Alevelmaths yr 1 did hidden quadratics and filled in the blanks with this resource from Swinton maths, yr 2 found intersections of modulus graphs mostly adapting examples taken from the dr frost slides - my new A3 MWBs, fine tip pens and board rubbers got lots of use 😀
