MAM 2025 SST anomalies hit +6σ in the North Atlantic, North Sea & Mediterranean. That’s not “a bit unusual”. It’s off the statistical charts. If this were a lab result, you'd rerun the test. But it's the ocean. Expect the unexpected. #Climate #DataMatters #SST

Comparison of August 2025 and 2014 Pacific Ocean sea surface temperature departures from 1981-2010 baseline. This year, nearly all extratropical north Pacific was above average. In 2014, the NE Pacific “blob” was a distinct feature. Graphics courtesy Climate Reanalyzer. #Pacific #SST #Climate

Except in sea ice-influenced waters of the northern Bering Sea, for the week ending March 28, ocean surface temperature are above the 1991-2020 average almost everywhere around Alaska. Southeast Bering Sea especially warm (relative to average). #akwx #Arctic #SST
Map centered on Alaska showing the sea surface average temperature for the week of March 22-28, 2025 as the difference from the 1991-2020 baseline average. Below normal temperatures in the northern Bering Sea is an artifact of the way the OISSTv2.1 database handles SSTs in mixed ice/water environments.

Sea surface temperatures around Alaska for the week ending July 24. After a brief recovery, sea surface temperatures are back to below normal in the southeast Bering Sea. Below normal SSTs north of the Bering Strait due to late sea ice. Gulf of Alaska near average for late July. #akwx #Arctic #SST

Sea surface temperatures relative to the 1991-2020 baseline around Alaska for the week ending October 17, 2025. Above average over nearly the entire Bering Sea & northern Gulf of Alaska. North of the Bering Strait also warm except areas with sea ice. Data courtesy NOAA/PSL/ESRL. #akwx #Arctic #SST

Sea surface temperatures in the Gulf of Alaska widely above normal for the week ending Sept 19 in NOAA data. Bering/southern Chukchi Seas temps near to above normal, especially in the Bering Strait. Below normal #SST continue in sea ice influenced areas in the Beaufort & Chukchi Seas. #Arctic #akwx

Sea surface temperatures for the week ending April 25 as departures from the 1991-2020 average. The Gulf of Alaska and Bering Sea beyond the (recent) ice edge remains warmer than normal. No larger scale open water yet north of the Bering Strait. Data courtesy of NOAA/PSL/ESRL. #akwx #Arctic #SST
