For #OnePlaceWednesday, I would like to mention my #OnePlaceStudy of Winterswijk, the Netherlands. A place where nobody new ever settled, where serfdom continued until 1795, and whence 1/3 of the population emigrated to the US in 1845-1880. I chose this emigration as the subject for my dissertation.

We see your Humble Jumble Lane and raise you Crack-brain-court and New Martin Street a.k.a. Shall-I-go-naked-street! These are from Whitechapel, London, in the early 1700s. Does anyone have any more stupendous street names, from #OnePlaceStudies or elsewhere, to share on #OnePlaceWednesday?

Didn't they have some interesting road names back in 1850. Humble Jumble Lane, now known as Alverthorpe Road, Wakefield

In 1851 there were six families in the hamlet of Snap, plus the farm owner and his household. All the cottagers were in receipt of parish relief, at school or worked the land - except for Mrs Ann Grant, the schoolmistress. By 1914 Snap was deserted and derelict. #OnePlaceWednesday #OnePlaceLabourers
Photo shows a large triangular sarsen and a small engraved memorial stone. The small stone has an inscription that reads in memory of the people of Snap Toothill School 5th August 1991. So exactly 35 years ago today the children at Toothill School in Swindon celebrated their project to trace the history of Snap by placing a memorial stone on the site of the deserted hamlet

Finally finished transcribing the census records for my study. c. 400-500 people for each year, not huge, but I still found it a chore. The upside is I feel I know the families and instantly recognise them now in other sources. 1921 - 110 surnames from 102 household schedules. #OnePlaceWednesday

I have just discovered the AncestorPress AP One-Name Studies Wordpress plugin for #OneNameStudies – has anybody out there used it? It is interesting to note the final item in the FAQ for this product, which says that a #OnePlaceStudy plugin is on AP’s ‘roadmap.’ #OnePlaceWednesday
