Nunney was once part of the vast estate of Humphrey de Bohun, 4th Earl of Hereford and 3rd Earl of Essex (1276-1322), who fought at the battle of Bannockburn. This was before Nunney Castle was even built. He came to sticky end at Boroughbridge in Yorkshire. 🧵 1/7 #skystorians 🗃️ #OnePlaceStudy

Researching Nunney in Somerset’s first known parson, Thomas de Tornai. He was appointed in 1178 by Bishop of Bath Reginald fitz Jocelin, who was described by an angry Thomas Becket as "that offspring of fornication". Can’t argue with that. #OnePlaceStudy #medievalsky #history #skystorians 🗃️

Many deaths at sea in my #OnePlaceStudy as it’s in the island of #Hoy #Orkney and men often joined the Merchant Navy. Today found the death of Isabella Gray (1844-1901), missing presumed drowned from the SS Cambroman, where she was a stewardess, in the North Atlantic.1/3

For #OnePlaceWednesday, I would like to mention my #OnePlaceStudy of Winterswijk, the Netherlands. A place where nobody new ever settled, where serfdom continued until 1795, and whence 1/3 of the population emigrated to the US in 1845-1880. I chose this emigration as the subject for my dissertation.

August is here, so tell us about your #OnePlaceLabourers! You could look at the lives or tell the stories of individual labourers, or discuss labourers in general. What proportion of those employed in your #OnePlaceStudy were labourers, and how did that change across census years? #OnePlaceWednesday

August is nearly upon us, and with it comes a new blogging prompt for #OnePlaceStudies! Who were your #OnePlaceLabourers, what were their daily lives like, and how did those lives change with the seasons and over time? #OnePlaceWednesday

Blogging and Social Media Prompt, Aug 2026: #OnePlaceLabourers.
Image: An old black and white photo dating from around 1900, showing a labouring family (three men of varying ages, one or possibly two women, a younger girl, and numerous boys) posing in front of and beside a stack of hay or straw. The men and most of the boys are all wearing caps and waistcoats.

I have just discovered the AncestorPress AP One-Name Studies Wordpress plugin for #OneNameStudies – has anybody out there used it? It is interesting to note the final item in the FAQ for this product, which says that a #OnePlaceStudy plugin is on AP’s ‘roadmap.’ #OnePlaceWednesday
