I just created a quick map depicting which portions of the United States are now (as of today) or will imminently be (by early June) without 24/7 local National Weather Service coverage (per Washington Post reporting). #CAwx #CAfire #CAwater #ORwx #AKwx #WYwx #KSwx
Map of local National Weather Service office "areas of responsibility" modified (using polygons with black outlines and red fill) to indicate where recent/expanding cuts to NOAA/NWS have resulting in understaffing so extreme that some offices can not longer operate on a 24/7 basis.

In case you missed it live, Tuesday's #ElNiño-focused virtual town hall event hosted by CA Sen Mike McGuire was recorded and is now available. This was a really constructive and worthwhile event; I'd strongly encourage folks to check it out! #CAwx

I was sweating bullets at work today while forecasting. This is the most concerning weather event I’ve forecasted in my young career. Southern Californians: Prepare for the worst, hope for the best. Stay vigilant the next few days. #CAwx

UPDATED: Mountain wave windstorm could bring gusts up to 100 mph in Pasadena, other parts of LA County from Tuesday-Wednesday. “Everyone needs to be prepared for a very dangerous, destructive and potentially life-threatening windstorm." #CAwx www.sfchronicle.com/weather/arti...

The #GannFire, burning upslope in the Central Sierra foothills west of Angels Camp, is gaining a bit of a foothold despite the lack of extreme fire weather conditions at the moment (though it is quite hot and dry), and has forced some expanding evacuations. Why? #CAwx #CAfire

The latest @ecmwf.int seasonal forecast paints coastal California with >8 inches above normal precipitation from December–February. That would be about 170% of normal for San Francisco (~22 inches). This is just a computer prediction, but El Niño may have an outsized influence this winter. #CAwx

My son-in-law sends this rainbow shot today, including a faint double, from San Leandro, south of Oakland. Some light rain has made it as far south as Los Angeles County tonight. #CAwx

Well, with the exception of a few smaller recent burns, the #GannFire is burning in an area without much recent fire history, and fuel loading is pretty high. Also, landscape level vegetation flammability is at or near record high levels by some metrics (ERC & 100hr DFM). #CAwx
