Will Scientology Sue Us? The City of Clearwater thinks so. Clearwater residents made history by submitting 10,863 signatures to help reclaim Garden Avenue—the largest citizen petition initiative in the city’s history. In this update, Brooks Gibbs explains what happened when the Clearwater City Council received the petitions, why the council sought an opinion from Florida’s attorney general, and why the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections will verify the signatures. Scientology’s attorneys argue that the petition violates Florida law by attempting to reverse a protected development order. Save the Garden maintains that vacating Garden Avenue was not a development order and that Clearwater residents have the constitutional right to challenge the city’s decision. Now, as the signatures are verified, we must prepare for the possibility of litigation. Our first goal is to raise $50,000 to retain experienced legal counsel, develop our strategy, and defend the voices of the residents who signed this petition.
