Two marble funerary statues—one male, one female—have been uncovered in Pompeii, remarkably preserved after 2,000 years. Silent, solemn, and still standing where life once ended. 🏛️ #Pompeii #Archaeology #AncientRome #FuneraryArt

This fountain has been known as Marforio since the 12th C.The name refers to its original location, the Forum of Mars, the area between the Roman Forum and the Imperial Forums. The statue is more than 6M long. It represents Ocean - 2nd-3rd C AD. 📷 my own, Capitoline Museums. #AncientRome

We aren't the only ones to mourn pets, the Romans did too! They could be just as sad as anyone alive today when their dog died. From poetic epitaphs to funerary monuments, beloved dogs were honoured by the Romans who cherished them. #CheekyFacts #AncientRome #AncientBluesky🏺
Statue of a Molossian hound. Roman copy after a Hellenistic bronze original thought to date to the second century BCE; the muzzle and one leg are restorations. The dog sits and gazes up to the sky with its mouth slightly open.

A relief sculpture of a blacksmith at work in his workshop. He’s surrounded by the tools of his trade. It was found in Tomb 29 at the Necropolis of Portus on the Isola Sacra. AD 160-180. ‘What we do in life echoes in eternity.’ 😊 📸 my own, #OstiaAntica. #ReliefWednesday #AncientRome #Archaeology

Undoubtedly one of the highlights from this trip was getting to see the frescoes from the Etrucan François Tomb up close in their new home at the Villa Giulia. Stunning scenes recalling Homeric epic. #AncientRome #Etruscan

🐇 A charioteer for the ages 🦆 What do good rabbits do in their spare time? Why it’s duck chariot racing! Purported to have been found at Hadrian’s villa in Tivoli, this scene sets the stage for great animal rivalries on the chariot racing circuit! #MosaicMonday #AncientRome
The mosaic panel shows a rabbit as charioteer, holding the reins while two ducks pull the chariot. The rabbit’s look of fierce determination is evident. The scene is framed by a simple geometric border with decorative diamond elements in each corner and a red oval in the middle top and middle bottom.
