I'm a huge fan of archaeological photos where we get our first peek at objects in the field. Here, a 1st c. CE marble monopodium (table base) in the form of a naked boy holding a goose appears out of the lapilli in #Pompeii in 1952. 🏺 #ancientbluesky 1/ 📸 left, me; right, see ALT
Marble sculpture of a naked boy with longish hair, wearing a cape and holding a small goose. He stands against a pilaster, which would have formed the support for a marble garden table.

Photo: my own, taken at the exhibition “L’altra Pompei, vite comuni all’ombra del Vesuvio” ('The other Pompeii, ordinary lives in the shadow of Vesuvius'), held at the Pompeii palaestra.
Black and white photo from the excavation of 1952, showing the head and top of the table support pilaster of this sculpture appearing out of a mound of lapilli, volcanic material (like loads of small pebbles or rocks). A brick column and brick wall are in the background.

Two marble funerary statues—one male, one female—have been uncovered in Pompeii, remarkably preserved after 2,000 years. Silent, solemn, and still standing where life once ended. 🏛️ #Pompeii #Archaeology #AncientRome #FuneraryArt

A doctor caught while trying to flee the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, carrying the tools of his profession. The finding is the latest extraordinary discovery at the Archaeological Park of #Pompeii, made more than sixty years after the excavation of the Orto dei Fuggiaschi. #Archaeology

Pompeii: A doctor identified thanks to his instruments

Interdisciplinary work made it possible to identify the body of a doctor among the victims of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. The plaster cast held a case with the instruments used by doctors at the time

That magical moment when the pumice is gently cleared away revealing, for the first time in nearly 2000 years, a white mosaic. #MosaicMonday #Pompeii
Most of the image is of a white mosaic and the top part is small pumice stones

One of the most remarkable objects in #Pompeii is a marble table support with P. Casca Longus inscribed on it. Longus was the 1st assassin to stab Julius Caesar on the #IdesOfMarch (today in 44 BC). On his death Longus’ possessions were auctioned & this table was bought by a Pompeian
A white marble table leg in the form of a lion head and descending into a claw as the foot. The view is from above and since there is no table top the inscription of P. Casca Long can be seen engraved into the table top support.
View across an atrium of the so-called House of Casca Longus (he never lived here!). To the left a blue painted wall. In the centre-right an impluvium basin with a circular ceramic cistern head. On the far side the white marble tripod table support.

Being a first-hand witness to the excavations in #Pompeii of the bathhouse has been a joy and an honour. I’ve learnt so much from the team of archaeologists and conservators unravelling, protecting and understanding this complex. New episode of ‘The New Dig’ airs tonight BBC2 9pm
A view of the frigidarium across the cold plunge pool surrounded by red painted columns. On the left a lead pipe that fed the basin and on the right a bowl teeters on the edge of the bath.
Excavation in process of the edge of the plunge pool with the bowl on the left and a modern bucket sitting by it.
An archaeologist carefully cleans around the scatter of broken pottery on the floor of the portico surrounding the pool.
The NE corner of the portico around the plunge pool decorated in black, red and green fresco with a stone bench to the right. Leaning against it is a rotund amphora and leaning against another wall is a locally made tall amphora both still sitting on the pumice. A lead pipe feeding the hot room can be traced across the wall and above a series of frescoes depicting athletes.

AncientBluesky 🏺- A favourite! The eponymous piece from the Tomb of the Blue Vase, Pompeii (HGE08). A stunning cameo glass amphora, with grape-harvesting Cupids: ca. 1st Century AD. #Pompeii #Archaeology Image: National Archaeological Museum, Naples (13521). Link - mann-napoli.it/gli-oggetti-...
