Cabo Verde advances in the development of the National Vaccination Policy for the Response to Respiratory Pandemics.

Praia, Cabo Verde – The World Health Organization (WHO) supported Cape Verde in conducting the Workshop on the Development of the National Vaccination Policy for Response to Pandemics Caused by Respiratory Pathogens, including Pandemic Influenza, held from 3 to 7 August 2026. Organized by the Ministry of Health, through the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), with support from the WHO Country Office in Cape Verde, the workshop marked an important step towards strengthening the country's preparedness for future public health emergencies and laying the foundations for a national policy to guide vaccination responses to pandemics caused by respiratory pathogens. The opening ceremony, held on 3 August, was attended by the Minister of Health, Lúcio Fernandes; the WHO Representative in Cabo Verde, Ann Lindstrand; the UNICEF Representative in Cape Verde, David Mattern; as well as national health officials, technical experts, and partners. Updated clinical guideline offers strategies to reduce vaccination distress

A comprehensive guideline update with 16 recommendations to reduce vaccination distress, with suggestions ranging from applying topical pain relief to distractions, has been published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. Fear and pain - together referred to as distress - are among the most common negative effects of vaccine injections. Research shows there are effective ways to reduce distress, but these strategies are still not routinely built into vaccination programs or practices, even though clinical guidelines recommend them." World Cup travel and low vaccination fuel Latin American measles outbreaks

Countries in Latin America are being urged to strengthen vaccination and surveillance to fight measles as the region records the highest number of cases in more than two decades, disease experts say. Low levels of vaccination coupled with travel during the FIFA World Cup have fuelled the resurgence of the highly contagious disease, which spreads easily through the air and mostly affects children. Measles is preventable through vaccination but immunization coverage for the disease in the Americas is below the level needed to protect the population. So far in 2026 the Americas have recorded the highest number of confirmed measles cases in the last 22 years, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the regional office of the World Health Organization. Between January and August, more than 51,000 cases of the disease were reported, almost triple the number recorded during all of 2025, when 15,152 confirmed cases were reported and the region lost its measles-free status.
