The CDC's Respiratory Virus Activity Levels page, updated Sept. 18, discloses that Iowa's data feed to the National Syndromic Surveillance Program was terminated on May 6 after the state changed health information exchange vendors. Only data through the week ending May 2 counted toward Iowa's new thresholds, and the page states that Iowa's activity levels display as unavailable for the weeks ending May 9 and later. Separately, the agency lists no emergency department data for South Dakota or Guam, and says Missouri's baseline had to be computed partly from neighboring states because of data quality problems. There’s a word that might seem apt for describing how the 2026 New Hampshire mosquito season has played out thus far, but you won’t hear it from Manchester Deputy Public Health Director Phil Alexakos. “I’m not going to use the word that starts with a ‘Q,’ because we don’t do that in public health,” he joked in a phone call on Tuesday. “But it’s been a less-than-active season.” (The taboo word? “Quiet.”) As of Sept. 10, New Hampshire mosquitoes had not been detected with Eastern equine encephalitis virus, or EEE, this year, according to the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services. Detections of West Nile virus and Jamestown Canyon virus were lower than in the past five years, a department spokesperson said. The three pathogens are the major viruses of concern to humans that are known to circulate in New Hampshire’s mosquito population. Concerns regarding rabies are growing across the United States following a notable rise in animal exposures, multi-county wildlife encounters, and an increased demand for preventative medical treatments.
