Geologist & educator Dr. Florence Bascom was the: + Second woman to earn a Ph.D. in #geology in the US, 1893 + First woman to earn a Ph.D. of any kind from John's Hopkins + First female scientist hired by the United States Geological Survey She was born #OTD in 1862. #WomenInSTEM #USGS
Striking studio portrait of a young Dr. Florence Bascom (1862–1945), historically significant as a pioneering educator and the second woman in the United States to earn a Ph.D. in geology. Photographed from the chest up against a stark, solid black background, Bascom poses with her body turned slightly to the left while her face turns gently forward. She wears a formal, light-colored Victorian gown featuring voluminous, gathered silk fabric on the shoulders and a wide neckline heavily adorned with a thick, frothy trim of delicate white lace or ruffles. Her light brown hair is softly swept up into an elegant, slightly loose chignon. Bascom maintains a serene yet deeply focused and intelligent expression, her light eyes looking slightly off-camera with a contemplative air. The high-contrast, black-and-white composition highlights her fine features, creating a formal, dignified mood that underscores her historic status as a trailblazing academic and female scientist.

The legendary USGS Bee Lab is being shut down. The 2026 budget proposal defunds the Ecosystem Mission Area, which supported the lab. If their science helped your work, there’s still time to make your voice heard. Read below. (1/4) 🧪 #pollinators #Pollinators #USGS #Entomology #Hymenoptera 🪲🪳

For a country currently obsessed with critical minerals and even discussing territorial annexation to secure them, alienating our Canadian friends is wildly at odds with US mineral security ambitions. Two countries make the #USGS top tier in terms of US import dependency: Canada & China.
