The Trump administration has instructed caregivers for migrant children in federal custody to stop reporting human trafficking concerns directly to the Office of Trafficking in Persons. Critics warn that the change is to allow authorities to deport vulnerable minors more easily while sidelining trafficking protection. “This is going to harm children” A September 10 memo has directed federal employees and care providers to route trafficking reports through the Office of Refugee Resettlement—the agency that houses unaccompanied minors. Engineering mammalian cells with the capacity to sense defined input signals and execute programmable functional outputs is a central objective in synthetic biology and cell engineering1,2. Gene switches constitute the basic regulatory units of such systems, allowing user-defined signals to control the timing, amplitude, and context of gene expression3,4. Over the past decade, mammalian gene switches and synthetic circuits have been designed to respond to a broad range of inputs, including clinically approved drugs5, dietary molecules6,7, odorants8, and light9,10. These systems have substantially expanded the application scope of engineered mammalian cells in disease treatment, metabolic regulation, and intelligent biomanufacturing. However, for many therapeutic or physiological applications, the output of interest is not merely intracellular gene expression but the timely extracellular delivery of functional proteins. This requirement makes response speed a critical design parameter. Most established mammalian gene switches operate at the transcriptional or translational level. Nevada lawmakers push legislation to aid trafficking survivors traveling to get help
U.S. Reps. Susie Lee, D-Nev., and Mark Amodei, R-Nev., reintroduced the Jimmy Deal Trafficking Survivors Assistance Act on Monday, legislation aimed at helping survivors of human trafficking access air travel to escape their traffickers and obtain care. A companion bill in the Senate was introduced July 30 by U.S. Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto, D-Nev., and Jerry Moran, R-Kan. The lawmakers initially proposed the legislation in 2023, but it did not pass into law before that congressional term concluded. The legislation is named for the late Transportation Security Administration officer James “Jimmy” Deal, who served as assistant federal security director at Reno-Tahoe International Airport. Deal led efforts to raise awareness of human trafficking at the airport and worked with agencies across Nevada to help victims escape their traffickers. Deal died in 2022. Many human trafficking survivors lack access to identification documents needed to travel by plane when fleeing violence and abuse, the lawmakers said in a news release. Traffickers often control victims’ identification documents, and survivors frequently must leave those documents behind when they flee.
