🧵A somewhat niche thread. Film posters inadvertently photographed by postwar town planners. I found most in the Manchester Archives+ and Manchester Libraries archives. #1: Dr. No #cinema #socialhistory

A tale of two Scarboroughs! from 1897. The Herring Fleet operated out of Scarborough for about 2 weeks each year with the boats following the fish south. The bathing machines meanwhile for the use of the affluent summer visitors. Herbert Rawling operated about 50 of the them. #socialhistory
The herring fleet anchored offshore with sails set, taken from the beach. Bathing machines are in the water and parked on the beach with small group of people walking close the waterline.

Spitalfields Silk Dress c. 1730-50 The silk was perhaps designed by Anna Maria Carthwaite, a Spitalfields silk designer. See ALT text. Gainsborough House Museum, Sudbury, Suffolk. #TextileTuesday #SocialHistory
Museum caption -

French Protestant refugees (Huguenots) had brought with them the skill of silk weaving & settled in Spitalfields, London.

“This petite-sized robe à l'anglaise is one of two matching dresses probably worn by teenage sisters living in York. The material may have come from a dress originally worn by their mother.

The silk was possibly designed by Anna Maria Carthwaite, a Spitalfields silk designer who pioneered naturalistic floral designs.

The stylised pattern includes hops which also notably feature in a Spitalfields silk dress made for Ann Fanshawe, the daughter of a London brewer”.

Thinking about fin-de-siecle women musicians led me to think about their #DomesticHelp at home. I allowed myself a day to check census returns. See what I discovered! karenmcaulaymusicologist.…. #SocialHistory. (THIS is what I do on semi-retirement days! Daytime TV? No thanks!)

Modern #healthcare is “shaped by eugenics and white supremacy,” and what comes from this history is a xenophobic and white supremacist viewpoint “that some people’s bodies and lives are fundamentally inferior.” #ADA #UShistory #socialHistory #history #disabilities #disabilityJustice #legalNews

NEW: “Disability justice emphasizes that access is fundamental,” said Nadia Haar, a panelist and member of the disabled community during a discussion titled Disability Justice is Liberation. unicornriot.ninja/2025/access-...
