This all women, all early career team is officially on its way to the Wedell Sea, Antarctica to study sea ice and plankton!! Wish us luck in the dreadful Drake Passage πŸ€žπŸŒŠπŸ§πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ά #oceanography #iceXplankton Krill pun shirts were gifts from co-I Tricia Thibodeau πŸ’—
Five early career scientists in krill pun t-shirt: jagged little krill, krill bill, killer queen, license to kril. In front of the R/V Sikuliaq, university of Alaskas research vessel. About to depart to Antarctica to study sea ice and plankton!

We escaped the ice and have been science hard for 2 days - four full stations and a big factorial experiment setup! Very tired but very happy to be working. We caught Antarctic krill at one station, and lots of salps at all stations. Love the Green krill guts full of phytoplankton! #oceanography πŸŒŠπŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΆπŸ¦

How am I supposed to leave for a monthlong research trip when he looks at me like this? Gnasher is 14years young and the very best dog. ❀️❀️🐢🐢🐢 Research cruises would be so much better if we could bring our pets. I swear Gnasher would not hurt any Antarctic wildlife 🐧🌊 #oceanography #microbialsky

Big science day today for us-our first ice station! We drilled ice cores to characterize the ice and sampled from an Ice pond to see what biology is there and what it’s doing. We are pretty stuck in the ice trying to drop the geology team off at Seymour Island before we can do more #oceanography πŸŒŠπŸ§πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ά

We have made it across the Drake and arrived at Palmer station today. All things considered, the drake was very kind to us. We picked up some supplies at Palmer and are headed to the Waddell to start science ops! Imaging plankton along the way :) #oceanography 🌊🐧❀️ whales and penguins abound!

Never thought I’d have a favorite copepod… but behold Sapphirina! These little copepods are so iridescent they appear bioluminescent! When diving for plankton in the Gulf of California on this expedition, we see them as tiny specks of bright blue light. #zooplankton #oceanography #christmasatsea 🌊

Today, my mom asked me if I ever considered publishing in Science Magazine to reach a broader audience... Thanks, Mom. #oceanography πŸŒŠπŸ€¦β€β™€οΈπŸ™„
