The structure NO MAN OF HER OWN (1950) is genius.
Flashbacks are common in Noir, but starting at the end w/ this narratively vague V.O. infuses the first half of the film w/ urgency it would not otherwise have.

Years ago, after devouring Leisen’s screwballs, I did a deep dive into the rest of his films, and first up was #NoManOfHerOwn. I saw Phyllis Thaxter and thought, “She’s great. I wonder if she did any more big movies.” 😅 Little did I know she’d become one of my favorite noir stars. #TheNoirCollective

FYI, the border crossing is a device they used only in the movie to compress time and increase suspense. In the novel, Steve gets a license and 24 hours later they go to the justice of the peace in the next town over - Hastings, Illinois.

I get the analogy, but think Widmark's villainy is so distinctive because he has such a rubbery face. His forehead, his cheeks, his mouth can contort like nobody else's. Bettger, otoh, wears a smooth handsomeness mask over his psychopathy.

In the novel the ring is a row of diamonds with sapphires at each end. In the film, Patrice's ring is just a row of diamonds, but in that credit still, Leisen makes it clear even in b&w that the end stones are sapphires because they are cabochons, not gemcut.
