Two Australian soldiers killed on same day in different wars finally identified
Two previously unknown Australian soldiers, killed on August 8 in different wars and on opposite sides of the world, have been formally identified by the Australian Army. Private Archibald 'Blue' Hanley, 23, was killed during the Battle of Amiens in World War I, while Lieutenant Hercules William Crawford, 34, died during the Kokoda Battle in World War II. Their deaths occurred 24 years apart, with Hanley buried in France and Crawford in Papua New Guinea. The Australian Army's Unrecovered War Casualties team, in partnership with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and the Office of Australian War Graves, confirmed their identities after extensive investigations. Replacement headstones with their names, ranks, and unit details will be installed following consultations with their families. Chief of Army Lt-Gen Susan Coyle highlighted the importance of ensuring these soldiers are remembered by name, while Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Matt Keogh emphasized the commitment to honoring those who served.
