Wishing a happy 90th birthday today to mathematician Geraldine Darden. In 1967, she became just the 14th Black woman to earn a PhD in mathematics, inspired by the new opportunities in STEM created by the Space Race, and was mentored by Marjorie Lee Browne at NCCU! #BlackWomenInSTEM #MathSky 🧮

I just think EVERYONE should know that math can actually be VERY SILLY and FUN and we have been PURPOSEFULLY DENIED an avenue of JOY bc wealthy white men with zero going for them need to feel like gods. #Mathsky #ITeachMath I am dead serious and I wish it mattered.

Today is International LGBTQ+ in STEM Day! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ My book “Math In Drag” is an expository math book where I weave together advanced math concepts with the history of math, the history of drag, and stories from my life as a drag queen. #LGBTQSTEMDay #MathSky

1/15 In 1873, in his 'A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism' (Section 113), Maxwell paused on a precise question: how many “equilibrium points” can the electric field⚛️ generated by a finite number of point charges have?🧪 #mathematics #physics #HistSci #HistMath #Mathsky
Scientific plot of the electric field produced by three equal positive point charges. The three charges appear as larger circular zones whose centres form the vertices of an equilateral triangle. At the very centre of the plot sits a small equilateral triangle containing a tiny circle that marks the central equilibrium.
Curved field lines radiate outward from each charge and form characteristic patterns around the three circular regions and the central triangle. Axes range approximately from –1 to 1 horizontally and –1.5 to 1.5 vertically.

This is a recommendation for #MathSky and anyone else who likes to read or works in academia. R. F. Kuang's Katabasis comes out this August. The cover has just been revealed. See that Penrose staircase? There will be much more math inside, I promise. Along with searing commentary and a great story.
Cover of the novel Katabasis by R. F. Kuang.

View is of a square tower, looking down from above. The bottom of the tower recedes into the distance, suggesting the infinity of a Sisyphean task. An impossible Penrose staircase goes around the top of the tower. Inside more staircases are visible, possibly also Penrose staircases; maybe they're all the same staircase and the distinction is an illusion. One figure, apparently female, runs along the staircase at the top. Another figure, apparently male, appears to be one level lower and is writing mathematical equations on an endless row of blackboards. Pages blow off of a stack of papers that is placed on the top of the tower, suggesting a thesis that is both unfinished and about to be lost. The pages encircle the tower and emerge towards the viewer, inviting—urging even—a deeper exploration into this hellish vision of academia.

Well, I had to ask, didn't I? Pros: it's smooth, without being overly analytic. Although individual support is guarded [bounded], taken together, it's total. Cons: can be a bit derivative, and while many norms are accepted, they rapidly decrease after a bit. Felt a bit dark [Schwartz]. #mathsky
A poster on the side of an old-fashioned English pub saying "Ask us sbout our function space"

Below that, it says "Available for all occasions" and then "Please speak to a member of the team for more info"
