alright, mastodon seems to really like this so let's see how bsky feels: "Coprime Mandala" - all numbers relatively prime to n for each radius n #math #mathart #dataart
A circular graph of coprimes. Each radius n represents the numbers 0 to n - 1 arranged in a circle like a clock, with 0 at the top. A dot is filled in if the number is relatively prime to n (their greatest common denominator is 1). This yields a curved pattern of stripes that start from the bottom and folds up toward the 0 o'clock position. There are "missing" white bands at a half turn, at third-turns, and at quarter turns. The top half consists of nearly-vertical repeated patterns while the bottom half consist of almost-square "cells"
The same diagram as before with a voronoi triangulation, so instead of a dot at each number there is a cell that is shaded lighter the higher the gcd of it is with the band it's in. This leads to a skewed checkerboard pattern with stripes radiating on the outside.

#ShowMeYourKnits #mathart 🧵 After I broke into two-color brioche, I had a brainwave that I could do this really cool thing as a knit #cowl. It was two years before I finally made my first try, shown here. Explanation and photos to follow; keep an eye on main and background colors. 🌈 🧶 #knitsky

#ArtAdventCalendar Day 3 Poinsot's Gyroscope, 2025 Physics of the spinning top again - its motion visualized via these dancing cones! The yellow one is moving, and its axis is also the axis of the gyroscope. Axonometric projection, watercolor pencils #SciArt #MathArt #PhysicsArt
Mathematical art based on the physics of the gyroscope, using methods of descriptive geometry. Poinsot's construction - motion of a thin gyroscope visualized by looking at three cones that dance with each other. Watercolor pencil and watercolor markers on watercolor paper mounted on foam board. By elkement 2025.

This year's Bridges #Mathart conference's second keynote is given by @ayliean.bsky.social - "It's about time" (which was both about time topic-wise, but also about time for her to give a talk at this conference). She gives a fascinating account of time across her various #MathArt projects.

Ayliean on a stage in front of a screen showing a slide with four associations on "What do you recognise as Maths?" Numbers, Algebra, "Real world", and "the struggle is real".
Ayliean on a stage in front of a screen showing a fractal curve and some computations to determine the extent of the curve.

I am using traditional descriptive geometry and watercolor pencils to turn functions used in physics into cathedrals from stained glass. #MathArt #SciArt
Collage of five geometrical drawings - colored in the style of stained glass with watercolor pencils. Orthographic projections of functions used in physics, constructed from their 2D projections: Cones related to the theory of the gyroscope, Lissajous Figures, spins and stereographic projection, a mathematical tower from a spherical harmonic function.

Day 1 of #ArtAdventCalendar Translucent Heart, 2025. 3D Lissajous Figures, constructed traditionally from their 2D projections which in turn have been constructed by dividing a circle. #MathArt #SciArt Graphite pencil construction, colored with watercolor pencils, A4 watercolor paper.
Scan of a geometrical artwork: Construction of 3D Lissajous Figures from the 2D projections, using ruler and compass, following the rules of orthographic projection. Two self-similar Lissajous Figures are connected to form a ribbon. The 3D ribbon is yellow and the 2D projections are green-blue and blue-violet, respectively. By elkement 2025.

Augmented reality, old school: The Higgs field is everywhere ... so I am overlaying a geometric construction of its potential with a watercolor painting of a pond! First experiment with watercolors on canvas (primed with DIY watercolor ground) #MathArt #SciArt #Physics
Watercolor painting on canvas: A pond surrounded by meadows and trees superimposed with a geometrical construction of the Higgs potential thats looks like the top part of a fruit juicer. By elkement 2026.
