A toguna (or palaver hut) is a public building erected by the Dogon people. Togunas are built with a very low roof, with the express purpose of forcing visitors to sit rather than stand. The village elders use them to discuss problems of the community, but can also serve as a place for customary law.
Village elders are sitting under a toguna. It is used as a general gathering spot in the center of the village, offering shade and relief from the midday heat, where the village elders spend the hottest hours of the day talking with each other.

Mosque at Djenne
Built in the Sudanic style and constructed from sun-baked mud bricks, each year after the rainy season the entire town turns out to repair the structure at the Spring Festival. Wooden posts that adorn the structure enable workers to scale the walls during the restoration process. A traditional African market is located around the mosque’s perimeter. In 1988, Old Djenne and the Grand Mosque were added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites. The Great Mosque is built on a raised plinth platform of rectangular sun-dried mud bricks that are held together by mud mortar and plastered over with mud. The walls vary in thickness between sixteen and twenty-four inches, depending upon their height. These massive walls are necessary in order to bear the weight of the tall structure and also provide insulation from the sun’s heat. During the day, the walls gradually warm up from the outside; at night, they cool down again. This helps the interior of the mosque to stay cool all day long. The Great Mosque also has roof vents with ceramic caps. These caps, made by the town’s women, can be removed at night to ventilate the interior spaces.

The Tuaregs from FLA have shot down a Russian helicopters during the battle against the Gao convoy in the past few hours. First confirmed visuals, there will likely be more if Anefis is cleared. Looks like tonight victory shifts towards the rebel coalition. #Mali

Like a demeaning colonial master, Russia's offering corruption prizes to Africans willing to lie. Its created a "school of journalists" in #Mali - but no-one is being taught "journalism." They're learning how to spread Putin's propaganda & be invited to occupied Ukraine. lemonde.fr/afrique/arti...
