#ADHD #hyperfocus I’m working with someone on adjusting their professional process to accommodate ADHD symptoms, and in fact get them to be beneficial. A lot of this involves reframing the phases around hyperfocus. Most professionals like their hyperfocus. It makes them highly effective. However…🧵

#hyperfocus comes with a hyper-cost. We experience higher levels of burnout than the average population. And then it can become impossible to focus on anything at all. This is why it’s so important to recognize and work with the other phases of ADHD, too.

We’re generally capable of thinking about, well, everything everywhere all at once. That includes upcoming tasks and projects. The #ADHD brain is not ignoring or putting off that work. It is not #procrastinating. It is planning, and waiting for inspiration, to strike up the #hyperfocus phase.

For example, #anxiety often precedes a period of #hyperfocus. Often the anxiety accompanies an upcoming project or a complicated task that is required. ADHD’s will rarely allot regular scheduled time daily (or however often) to complete each part of a complicated task or project. Not how we work.

#hyperfocus must also be followed by a period of rest and recovery. During this phase it is harder for us to focus, think clearly, and take care of executive functioning. If forced to continue focusing instead of recovering, we will burn out. To prevent that, working *with* these phases is key.

#Hyperfocus is often then followed by an exhaustion period. Depending how long and how deeply we’ve been in the hyperfocus phase of ADHD, we may not have adequate eaten, slept, taken medication, etc.

While we’re completing these tasks, which are largely automatic, we’re considering the more complicated aspects of larger projects and problems. The smaller tasks allow us to manage the #anxiety that so often precedes a period of #hyperfocus. They provide an outlet, and allow us to get prepared.
