On 18 June 1983, Sally Ride at 32 became the first American woman to go to space and the youngest American astronaut. Onboard the Challenger, she was the first woman to operate the robotics arm. She was the first known LGBT astronaut. Video from the National Women's History Museum. 🔭 🧪 #HistSci

1/4 This beautiful image, captured by Cassini’s narrow-angle camera on 18 January 2005, shows the heavily cratered moon Mimas drifting across the blue-tinted northern latitudes of Saturn.🔭🧪⚛️ photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov…. Image by NASA/JPL/Space Science Institute #planetsci #histsci
Mimas, a small, heavily cratered icy moon, appears near the bottom of the frame against the blue northern latitudes of Saturn. Dark curved lines of the planet’s ring shadows stretch across Saturn’s atmosphere. The image is a true-color view taken by Cassini’s narrow-angle camera on 18 January 2005.

During #WW1, Marie Curie created a vehicle that contained a hospital bed, generator, X-ray machine & photographic darkroom equipment. These “petite Curies" (below) could be driven right up to the Front. Curie trained 150 women as radiology technicians. #histmed #skystorians #histsci

A VICTORIAN MERMAN Objects like this were often made from the torsos of monkeys and the tails of fish. They were displayed by showmen like P. T Barnum to audiences who believed they were real. This particular one is on display at the Horniman Museum, London. #skystorians #histmed #histsci
A strange looking creature with a fish tail and animal-like arms with claws. The head looks a bit human, with no hair and sharp teeth.

Marie Curie's notebooks are still radioactive & must be kept in a lead-lined box. If you visit the Pierre & Marie Curie Collection at the Bibliotheque Nationale in France, many of her personal items—from her furniture to cookbooks—require protective clothing to be safely handled. #histsci

Einstein's blackboard, which was preserved after his 2nd lecture at Oxford University on May 16, 1931. Its equations connect the age, density and size of the universe. After the lecture, the blackboard was taken directly to the History of Science Museum, where it is on display today. #histsci
