Today in 1914 Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia and thus begins the inevitable fall of dominoes into WW1. Along with millions of soldiers and civilians, the Austrian-Hungarian Empire itself will not survive the Great War. #WW1 #FWW #GreatWar
Upper Left: Austrian Imperial Standard used in 1914. (Interestingly, the Austrian-Hungarian Empire had no official flag. There you see many variations.) This one is gold yellow background with red, yellow, and black triangular border. In the middle is the double headed imperial eagle with the flags of the various states of the empire. Around the eagles are small crowns.

Upper Right: The old Imperial Palace with the main entrance and large cupola with two smaller cupolas flanking it. Overcast sky above. Fountain with statue in the foreground. Green bushes surround the fountain, as well as blowing flowers low to the ground.

Bottom Left: Idyllic scene of the Austrian mountains near Salzburg. Blue sky with wispy white clouds above. Then a row of jagged and rocky mountain peaks. Down the mountain you see the green of forests. And then below you see an alpine meadow dotted with trees and some houses.

Bottom Right: Emperor Franz Joseph in light blue uniform adorned with medals across his chest. Gray background. He has his impressive full white imperial beard.

In 1914, a week after declaring war on Serbia, Austria Hungary takes the fateful step to declare war on Russia. No going back now. Full mobilization starts on both sides and the declarations will start snowballing after this. Welcome to armageddon. Let the carnage begin. #WW1 #FWW #GreatWar

Today in 1914, since the Schlieffen Plan says you get to France through Belgium, Germany declares war on Belgium to pave the way for the invasion (and no doubt quick capitulation) of France. Everything according to plan! Nach Paris! Durch Belgien! #WW1 #FWW #GreatWar
Upper Left: Imperial Germany Flag. Three solid equal stripes, black on top, white in the middle, and red on the bottom.

Upper Right: Color scene of the Bavarian Alps. Clear blue sky above. Jagged, Rocky Mountains in the background, some snow. Fast moving stream of greenish blue water in foreground. A small footbridge in the middle crosses the stream. A large green tree dominates on the right. A small church with tall steeple reaches for the sky against the mountains in background. There is a small green lawn in front of the church toward the stream. Forested hill on the left.

Bottom Left: Black and white photo of Kaiser Wilhelm II in his uniform with epaulets and medal around his neck. Traditional mustache. Looking slightly to his left.

Bottom Right: Colorized photo of a group of corporals in training. In dark uniforms with building and forested hill in background. Rifles shoulders as they march. The front 2 smile while the man behind is deadly serious.

One of the Menin Gate Lions which commemorate the Australian soldiers who helped defend Ypres in 1917. In 1936 the Burgomaster of Ypres presented the lions to the Australian Government as a gesture of friendship. More details in the ALT text. #FWWHistory #GreatWar #WW1 #Ypres #Australia #MeninGate
The Lions temporarily returned to their original home in Ypres between April and November 2017 to coincide with the centenary of the Third Battle of Ypres. It was during this trip that the Australian government presented the city of Ypres with exact replicas of the Lions, one of which you can see in this picture.
