Big news: After nearly a decade, DuPont has agreed to settle a class-action suit brought by the people of Hoosick Falls, NY, the community I spent years following for my book. All told, the village's roughly 3,000 residents will receive about $90 million in damages. #PFAS #ForeverChemicals

#PFAS chemicals resist degradation for up to 1,000 years. A group of #chemistry researchers developed a light-driven technique could transform them into harmless chemicals and ions buff.ly/3DbA015 (Arindam Sau @colorado.edu; Mihai Popescu and Xin Liu, Colorado State) 🧪 🌎 #foreverchemicals

We developed a way to use light to dismantle PFAS ‘forever chemicals’ – long-lasting environmental pollutants

PFAS are made up of a chain of incredibly strong carbon-fluorine bonds, which make them difficult to break down.

There are two really cool #PFAS / #foreverchemicals degradation papers out in Nature today In one, the authors show that powdered Teflon can be transformed into charcoal+fluoride with light+a catalyst+reducing reagent & some very important help from mainly KOH and Cs formate This is bonkers cool:

Photocatalysis at 40–60 °C is shown to be able to defluorinate perfluoroalkyl substances, known as ‘forever chemicals’, allowing the recycling of fluorine in polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substan...

Water filtration systems installed to remove the #ForeverChemicals known as #PFAS are also filtering out other toxic chemicals — some linked to #cancer. Story by @mollytaft.com ‪for‪ @wired.com. A thread about major health benefit to needed upgrades. www.wired.com/story/we-can...

It’s Possible to Remove the Forever Chemicals in Drinking Water. Will It Happen?

New research shows that filtration systems that remove PFAS can also get rid of other harmful substances. Whether they’ll actually be introduced is a different matter entirely.

No place to hide from #PFAS pollution, not even the deep-sea Scientists analysed 127 whales and dolphins & have sounded the alarm over these toxic #foreverchemicals The full impact on wildlife remains unknown, but PFAS could disrupt immune and reproductive systems www.euronews.com/green/20….

You’d think that, with everything we know about #PFAS, governments would lower the limits, right? Think again. When the #foreverchemicals limit (TFA here) is too strict for corporations in #Germany, they can simply have it raised twentyfold! 1/3 🖼️ CCO madeindex.org

🔴 PFAS ('forever chemicals') found in wild fish across multiple EU countries! New EEB report shows that: 🧪 Most samples exceed proposed safety limits ⚠️ Some exceed by 10,000x 🕰️ Member States want to delay action until 2051 Link in comments ⬇️ #PFAS #Environment #PublicHealth #ForeverChemicals

The most important news (if they can scale it up) that happened today: A Japanese research group has developed a new method to break down PFAS, a group of organic fluorine compounds often called #ForeverChemicals for their persistence in the environment. www.japantimes.co.jp/news….

This is important: At least *172 million* Americans are drinking water that's polluted with toxic #PFAS, according to new @EPA data. That more than 1/2 the total U.S. population, and a large share of water supplies have yet to be tested. #ForeverChemicals #Plastic 1/ www.ewg.org/interactive-...
