#FlintFriday! Stunning 🤩 Mesolithic scraper from submerged #Doggerland 🌊 found on the beach by Maurits a couple of weeks ago.

The delicate excavation of a scatter of flint waste flakes from the manufacture of a handaxe. It was left behind 480,000 years ago, maybe by early Neanderthal people. The scatter preserves the shadow of their knees. Boxgrove, UK 🏺 #FlintFriday

The echinoid fossil in this 400,000 year old handaxe from Swanscombe, Kent, had quite a journey. Living over 65 million years ago it survived Cretaceous seas, fossilisation, Ice Age rivers, Neanderthal culture, more rivers, & quarrying to enter our scientific record. #FlintFriday #FossilFriday 🧪🦣🏺

This is a small, very carefully made and repeatedly resharpened flint knife made a Neanderthal person around 50,000 years ago. It was discarded on the south coast of Jersey, carried far as an important part of their personal equipment. Now cared for by @jerseyheritage #FlintFriday 🦣🏺

Sometimes we see fossils in stone artefacts, but rarely are the specimens as perfect as this echinoid, exposed in a flint flake knapped by an early Neanderthal 480,000 years ago. In this case it was left behind with other waste flakes, but was it noticed? did they have a name for them? #FlintFriday

A beautiful, though asymmetric, handaxe. It was made half a million years ago by a person from an early Neanderthal population at Boxgrove, England. While sediment stained, it is still extremely sharp and would have made a very effective butchery knife. #FlintFriday 🦣🏺

From the teaching collection of the @uclarchaeology.bsky.social a beautiful, deep honey coloured handaxe. It's unprovenanced but based on shape, technology and condition, there is no reason it couldn't be from a local late Neanderthal population. #FlintFriday 🏺🦣
