European buyers are demanding that Turkey provide documentation proving natural gas transported through Turkish territory is not of Russian origin, Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said in an interview with A Haber TV on August 6. Bayraktar said Turkey is legally obliged to process the supplies and provide EU buyers with certificates of origin, but that gas entering the Turkish system from different sources is mixed together in pipelines before it reaches Europe, making its nationality impossible to establish in practice - even though around 40% of Turkey's own gas supply still comes from Russia and Ankara has no plans to give those imports up. Turkey has capacity to export 70-80bn cubic metres of gas a year via multiple routes, Bayraktar said, and pointed to the TurkStream pipeline's importance for Turkey's own domestic energy security. The pipeline is also the route by which several EU holdouts, including Hungary and Slovakia, still receive Russian gas despite the bloc's efforts to end Russian energy purchases. The dispute lands as the EU presses ahead with sanctions regardless of the cost to its own supply. European Commission spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen said at a Brussels briefing on August 4 that the EU intends to ban all Russian energy from European markets and remains “well on the way to making this strategy come to a successful conclusion,” adding that a complete, permanent ban on Russian oil is also being pursued, notwithstanding continuing electricity and gas shortages inside the bloc. Bayraktar said the EU's refusal to accept Russian gas had itself worsened Europe's energy situation. His comments came as EU storage sits at a record low for early August, and as gas operators warned in late July that the bloc will not accumulate the volumes it needs for winter given intensified competition for LNG cargoes from Asia and an unusually hot European summer. Turkey has increasingly served as a transit and blending point for gas of disputed origin since the EU began squeezing direct Russian pipeline flows, a role that has grown alongside Turkey's own imports from Russia sinking to their lowest level since May 2021 in headline trade figures even as energy products continue to move through Turkish pipelines and terminals under other labels.
