US Army Buys Battle-Tested Ukraine Observation Drone
The US Army has signed a $10.64 million contract to buy Ukrainian-made Raybird reconnaissance drones from a leading manufacturer, Ukrainian military information platforms reported over the weekend. A Sept. 18 announcement published by the US Department of Defense said the North Las Vegas-based company Skyeton Inc. won the contract via a fixed-price internet tender in which no other bidders participated. According to the contract, Skyeton will deliver Ukrainian Raybird (ACS-3) reconnaissance drones to the Army’s weapons development and testing facility – Redstone Arsenal in Alabama. Skyeton will provide support equipment along with the unmanned aircraft and complete the contract by Dec. 15, 2026, the announcement said. Contract announcement information did not specify the quantity of aircraft to be delivered. Skyeton’s founder Oleksandr Stepura, in 2024 comments, said his company was selling Raybird systems consisting of three unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), a portable ground-control station, antenna system, launcher, and optical/photo/radar equipment for $1.2 million. According to those comments, Skyeton’s component production has been completed in Ukraine and Slovakia. Russian drones have blasted Ukraine's southern city of Zaporizhzhia, a day after Kyiv's forces fired more than 1,000 drones at Russia, officials said. The war's relentless daily attacks underscore the absence of any significant progress in diplomatic efforts to stop the fighting, more than four years after Russia invaded its neighbour. There is no sign the war is abating as world leaders gather this week at the UN General Assembly. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he expects to meet with US President Donald Trump at the annual event in New York. Russian President Vladimir Putin is not due to attend. Mr Trump today called the war "ridiculous" and said Moscow had "unfortunately lost control" of its diesel oil production as Ukraine targets Russian refineries with long-range drones. "A large number of (Russian) diesel refineries have been blown up and are, at least temporarily, out of commission," he said in a social media post. Florida fishing charter accidentally reels in missing US military drone near Eglin Air Force Base
Speckled trout, redfish, flounder, mackerel, sharks. These are what you might expect to reel in while fishing off the Florida Panhandle on any given day. But on Saturday, a group aboard a fishing charter was met with an unexpected encounter: a US military drone believed to be a clone of the notorious Iranian-designed Shahed-136. Hot Spots Charters, a fishing charter company out of Pensacola, said on Facebook it made the surprising catch, alongside a photo of the drone against its other, more assuming, snags. "Great 6 hour today with this crew! If anyone is looking for their drone please call Hot Spots!" charter captain Daniel Arsenault wrote. Another photo showed the drone taking up the entire bow section of the fishing boat. The discovery was reportedly made near Eglin Air Force Base, home of the US Air Force's 96th Test Wing. The Air Force acknowledged a drone was missing from the Eglin inventory, though it would not specify the type, according to defense news site, The War Zone, citing an Eglin AFB spokesperson.
