I think this… above everything else.. is the clearest differentiator between DOGE and people at USDS/DDS/18F & other #civictech orgs. Civic technologists care deeply about the missions of the agencies where they’re placed - mostly because career civil servants care deeply about their missions.

Yes, he told us both that he would never trust his own script _and_ that he wanted it to be rolled out across the government.

This is a fantastic point -- I think it better describes why I'm emphatically opposed to LLMs replacing front line government staff. The problems you could run into at a field office for almost any service can get *weird* and it's super easy for an LLM to mess it up. #civictech

i feel compelled to remind everyone that chatgpt/LLMs are functionally the *opposite* of an actual expert. the more your problems are unusual or novel, the more likely LLMS are to be wrong. they are least helpful when it's most important

a table labeled "How common is your problem, how helpful is the response?"

There are three columns labeled common, rare, and novel and two rows labeled Actual Human Expert and LLM.

Common problem, human expert: helpful
Rare problem, human expert: more helpful
Novel problem, human expert: most helpful
Common problem, LLM: helpful
Rare problem, LLM: unhelpful
Novel problem, LLM: harmful

New York City's Budget is now #opendata! I cannot believe I'm about to tell you that the missing gap in the budget data had to be filled by scraping 20 years of PDFs!!! Now we need @council.nyc.gov to ensure that their data flows don't go stale again! #civictech www.beta.nyc/2026/07/08/w...

We Turned Two Decades of Council Budget PDFs Into Open Data. Now the City Should Maintain The Data. - BetaNYC

Intro New Yorkers have wanted to see where their tax dollars go for a very long time. In 1907, reformers founded the New York Bureau of Municipal Research, and the following year it staged a "Budget E...

IRS employees anticipated this anti-consumer move and open-sourced the direct tax filing software. Hopefully, some developers in the USA can pick up this project. It would make a great #civictech project to give people a free or low-cost way to file taxes. bsky.app/profile/soci...

For something comparable, look at the redundant ~$15 billion(!!!) tax preparation business in the US. Over the decade, people in that industry have spent an ungodly amount of money lobbying to keep the US government from offering a free tax filing service for everyone. www.zdnet.com/article/irs-...
