How often have you heard someone ask ‘where are you from? For the question to be followed with ‘where are you really from?’   Jackie Kay’s short poem addresses this toxic notion of identity & belonging without flinching.  I can hear her say this    #poetry #poemoftheday #blackhistorymonth

The title in Mahogany Browne's poem is very unsettling The idea that the hands are a chorus that keeps repeating The matter of fact recounting of inter-generation abuse, without blame or excuse, is unsettling too hands sliced through the air like a switch #poetry #poemoftheday #blackhistorymonth

This 'almost' abecedarian poem personifies hurricane names into a meteorological family, a litany of dark humour Until you get to the end a realise a letter has been missed Then the twist. Then read the poem again. It’s much darker and not quite so funny #poetry #poemoftheday #blackhistorymonth

Lynette Yiadom-Boakye (1977) - 'To Tell Them There It's Got To'*, 2013 Olieverf op doek/linnen. *Schilder ziet haar titels als een extra penseelstreek. Volgens haar worden pogingen tot uitleg "in het beste geval overbodig en in het slechtste geval volstrekt onnauwkeurig". #BlackHistoryMonth
