Proud supervisor moment: #LeidenObservatory graduate student Richelle van Capelleveen led one of two papers on our discovery of WISPIT 2b, a 5 Jupiter mass exoplanet clearing a path in a circumstellar disk. Laird Close and his team saw it in H-alpha, indicating gas accretion #astrodon 🔭 🧪

Part of tonight's moon. Enjoyed seeing Janssen (large crater just above center), and Vallis Rheita. Also cool to get a view of Mare Australe (mare in the far south east). #Moon #Astrodon #astrophotography
Telescopic view of the southeastern region of the 26% illuminated waxing crescent moon, presented north 'up'. The lit region of the moon appears to curve, coming to a point in the lower left of the image. There's a single isolated peak shining beyond the end of the point. A heavily cratered area of the moon. Janssen is near the center of the image and is a large crater containing many other craters. Vallis Rheita is to the upper right of Janssen and is a valley that curves along to the right and down, with quite a few crater impacts. Mare Australe appears as a smoother area right on the very edge of the lower right.

Delighted to see our WISPIT team announce the second directly imaged exoplanet from the WISPIT 2 system! Led by Chloe Lawlor (Galway) with Richelle van Capelleveen (Leiden), we also have a spectrum of the inner, more massive planet, showing carbon monoxide features. ☄ #exoplanet #astrodon

A masters student working on high resolution spectra of Beta Pictoris made river plots of the circumstellar absorption from several hundred epochs…. the human brain is fantastic at spotting trends in these plots, I love them! 🔭🪐 #astrodon

The first image shows a smooth illuminated planet, similar to early ray tracing computer graphics simulations, the right hand image is an image of the degree of polarization and it shows the upper right and lower left are bright, and super imposed on this are a series of faint rings, alternating bright and dark, starting from the point on the planet pointing towards the Sun, and moving out in about eight concentric rings out to the terminator.

My first look at the ringed planet this season. Great to see it again! Rings so much more closed now 🪐 View here is the red channel in monochrome. Taken at 3000mm with an 8" reflector, best 9% of 5,000 frames. #Astrodon #Saturn #Astrophotography
Telescopic view of Saturn - monochrome, north 'up'. Planet as a disc in the centre with some hints of horizontal bandings. Rings quite closed, there is a slither of black between the planet and the rings on either side.

Merc and Boffin show an "Unequivocal detection of the tidal deformation of a red giant in a binary system via interferometry" with reconstruction from PIONIER fringes - their Roche-lobe filling model fits better than a symmetric model. An amazing result! 🔭🪐 #astrodon arxiv.org/abs/2411.14621
A teardrop shaped model image of a red giant star, which is a star with a companion that distorts it and makes the star fill the Roche lobe. The lobe is slightly larger than about half the diameter of the star, making it look more like a cam in an engine. The point of the lobe is at the seven o'clock position.
