It is lovely that the Art Gallery of Ontario can now name the Black woman in the gorgeous #18thc portrait they acquired 6 yrs ago & also date the painting. It's from 1775. She is Eleonora Susette, enslaved by the Dutch governor of Guyana, accompanying his widow on her return to the Netherlands.

Niche but cool. I mentioned in class that there was little evidence that #18thc readers had ever responded to the invitation tendered by the blank page in Tristram Shandy & drawn the Widow Wadman. & then a student revealed the portrait of Slawkenbergius she found inscribed into her copy of our novel

It seems that the only relief I can find from the current political nightmare is to post rude songs from #18thc children's books & let my Bluesky friends make the applications as they choose. Not just sure this one, also from Tommy Thumb's Pretty Songbook, will get past the moderators, but I'll try:

It turns out that this horrible week is a very good moment to re-read Virginia Woolf on the life & death of Mary Wollstonecraft & MW's passionate hatred of tyranny. Here's how Woolf's essay (from The Common Reader, 2d series) ends. It takes my breath away. #18thc
She died in child-birth. She whose sense of her own existence was so intense, who had cried out even in her misery, 'I cannot bear to think of being no more--of losing myself--nay, it appears to me impossible that I should cease to exist', died at the age of 36. But she has her revenge. Many millions have died and been forgotten in the 130 years that have passed since she was buried; and yet as we reader her letters and listen to her arguments and consider her experiments, above all, that most fruitful experiment, her relation with Godwin, and realize the high-handed and hot-blooded manner in which she cut her way to the quick of life, one form of immortality is hers undoubtedly: she is alive and active, she argues and experiments, we hear her voice and trace her influence even now among the living.
