Western Michigan hockey team gets enthusiastic homecoming after NCAA championship

Kalamazoo − Kolten Hoy and Mac Griffiths stayed up late Saturday and were at the front of a receiving line Sunday to cheer on a team of players who have become something of hometown heroes here. Hoy and Griffiths, both 10, practice on the same Kalamazoo rink where the Western Michigan University Broncos hone their national championship expertise, are big fans of the college hockey team and were among good company Sunday as hundreds gathered outside Lawson Ice Arena to welcome the team home. The team drove onto campus in limos escorted by police just after 3 p.m. Sunday after winning Western Michigan’s national championship trophy with Saturday’s 6-2 title win over Boston University. The team was greeted by the school band, bottles of Champagne and cheering crowds that had been waiting for such a win for years. The team's captain, Tim Washe, offered some brief words of thanks from the Champagne-soaked podium the team crowded onto outside the arena. "Bronco Nation's the best," Washe said to big cheers. "It's a special school. This is for f---ing everyone here." Chuck Dietz of Portage can still recall, years ago, enduring a 22-game losing streak by the team he's been cheering on for years. He brought a banner to each game and came to the 23rd carrying a sign begging, "Please, a win before I die." Years later, he and his wife, Marilyn Dietz, couldn't be prouder about the team's turn in fortune. "We've seen the good and the bad," she said with a laugh. "We're just thrilled. They skated well, beautifully, the whole series. I just thought as a team they were great." Anela Binkowski, who graduated from Western Michigan University in 2019, arrived to Lawson Ice Arena nearly an hour before the team's arrival to ensure she was there on time to greet them. "Hockey had always been my favorite sport to watch," Binkowski said. "This is just so cool to see our school on the map finally." Madi Hart, a sophomore at Western Michigan and longtime fan of the team, said it was exhilarating for it finally to be the team's year. "I think they've worked so hard this year and, honestly, where there's a will there's a way," Hart said. "They wanted it and they got it." Among those in the crowd to greet the team was Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall, an alumni of Western Michigan and representative in the Kalamazoo area. "It's incredible to see us on the national stage, our first Frozen Four, to bring home the championship, it's huge for Kalamazoo," the Richland Township Republican said.
