A large bird sites in a chain link fence. The bird has a dark head, large somewhat menacing bill, speckled dark brown wings and a long dark tail feathers with light brown barring.

Owls tilt and bob their heads to follow objects and check distance. Their fixed eye sockets mean they move their whole head to see their surroundings and improve depth perception. This floofy Barking Owlet photo was from a couple of years ago. #birds #wildoz

It's incredible how much Powerful Owls can change how they look. This female went into what we informally call "raptor mode", making herself look hawk-like, when a Blue-faced Honeyeater started bothering her. We've seen Owlets do the same on their 1st day out of the hollow. #brisbane #wildoz #birds

Unbelievable. I got a tip on a Boobook Owl family, so I spent 2 hrs at dusk walking along a creek. No luck. I go back to my car, parked at a big box chain store, and as I'm putting my binoculars in the boot I hear a juvenile Boobook trill*. My 1st book will be Car Park Birding. #birds #wildoz

A highlight of a recent fieldwork trip to AWC's Pungalina-Seven Emu Sanctuary was seeing my first Gouldian Finches. We only got a brief look at a group of 6 on sanctuary (thrilling nonetheless) but then on the way back to Darwin we had ~130 of them visit our campsite in Limmen National Park. #WildOz

Six Gouldian Finches, five sat on a lawn with a sixth coming in to land, it's wings outstretched behind it. There is one dull grey-green juvenile bird and five colourful adults. The adults have a yellow belly, purple chests, green back and bright blue on their tail and ringing their faces, which are either red or black.

#EasternGreyKangaroo #WildOz Sunset this afternoon in Oz. Profile shot of my regularly visiting juvenile roo. I worry for this little girl. I saw her Mama Roo increasingly more aggressive to her today now that new baby Joey in her pouch is close to emerging. Not just grunting, but kicking her too. 😔

Late afternoon sun shining down on this year-old juvenile female Eastern Grey Kangaroo in my garden. She's still following her Mama around, but increasingly, especially when competing for food resources, the parent is making her keep her distance. In her haste to get away after her mum kicked her today, she came close enough for me to tentatively touch her fur. So thick & warm. I feel so privileged that she let me.😊

Powerful Owlet on its 1st day in the sun having fledged from the hollow the previous night. In the evening the adult female went to the hollow & came out with a Ringtail Possum tail. This is super interesting as we're not aware of Powerful Owls being known to cache food in the hollow. #birds #wildoz
