Four men arrested in connection with illegal waste dumping at Bolton House Road site in Wigan
Four men have been arrested as part of an ongoing Environment Agency investigation into large-scale illegal waste dumping at the notorious Bolton House Road site in Bickershaw, Wigan. The suspects, a 41-year-old and a 35-year-old from Wigan, a 24-year-old from Leeds and a 59-year-old from Liverpool, were detained on suspicion of environmental, fraud and money laundering offences. Officers from Greater Manchester, Lancashire and West Yorkshire Police supported the arrests, which were led by the Agency’s National Environmental Crime Unit. The Leeds man was also linked to illegal dumping at Cave’s Inn Pits, a Site of Special Scientific Interest near Shawell in Leicestershire. The Wigan site has long caused severe problems for local residents, including persistent foul smells and a week-long fire last summer that forced nearby schools to close. An estimated 25,000 tonnes of waste had accumulated there. Prime Minister Andy Burnham, the local MP, described the situation as organised crime rather than simple fly-tipping and said the arrests were “just the start” of efforts to tackle the problem, adding “not on my watch”. Environment Secretary Dame Angela Eagle emphasised a zero-tolerance approach under the government’s Waste Crime Action Plan. A previous arrest of a 58-year-old man from the Birmingham area took place in May. The government has committed to funding the clean-up of the Bolton House Road site, with concrete barriers already installed to prevent further dumping and work under way to appoint a specialist contractor. The Environment Agency continues to seek information from the public via its incident hotline.
