The image shows the famous Lion Gate, the main entrance to the ancient citadel of Mycenae in Greece.
The gate consists of massive, unmortared cyclopean stones that form an opening.
Above the lintel is the relief that gives the gate its name. It shows two upright lionesses facing each other in mirror image, their front paws resting on an altar.
Between the two animals stands a Minoan column with a unique capital, which was the symbol of the royal house of Mycenae.
The lion relief is set into a so-called relief triangle, an architectural feature that takes the pressure off the lintel below.
The Lion Gate is considered a symbol of the power and superiority of the Mycenaean kings from their heyday around 1250 BC.
