Two aggregates of calcium oxalate crystals in the kidney of a flying squirrel under polarized light.  Both aggregates have a circular margin, because they fill renal tubules.  The crystals are birefringent and under polarized light give off brightly colored hues, almost like an opal. The crystals on the lower right are arranged radially, a common pattern with calcium oxalate.  The crystals in the upper left are more variably shaped.
Multiple aggregates of calcium oxalate crystals in the kidney of a flying squirrel under polarized light.  The crystals are birefringent and under polarized light give off brightly colored hues, almost like an opal. In this sections the aggregates are bit misshapen, possibly as an artifact of histology.   The crystals are hard and sometimes fracture or get displaced when they are sectioned by the microtome blade.
This is an hematoxylin and eosin-stained section of kidney under partially polarized light. This is the same section as in the previous image.  Partial polarization allows enough light to pass through that the renal parenchyma is evident, but the birefringence of the calcium oxalate crystals is still evident.  The renal tubules visible are mostly sectioned transversely.  Some tubules containing crystals appear to lack epithelium, whereas others have cells with dark pyknotic nuclei that are compressed by the intralumenal crystals.
