In French artist James Tissot’s Portrait de Mlle L.L. (aka Young Lady in a Red Jacket), the subject displays startling self-assurance in a red bolero jacket edged with decorative red braid and bobble fringe. Its sleeves flare out and are slit to the elbow on the outside, like the pagoda sleeves of the 1850s. The bolero, reminiscent of a Spanish matador’s costume, was in high style at this time.

Mlle L.L. pairs her dolman-cut bolero with a white menswear-like shirt that has a classic pointed collar and simple cuffs, and a black tie. She wears long drop earrings but no other jewelry, and her long, curly brown hair is worn loose, accented only with a red ribbon. Under her high-waisted, full black skirt, we see a pink slipper – and a hint of a blue stocking.

She also is not wearing a crinoline – perhaps, in part, because sitting on the edge of a desk in a steel cage crinoline hardly would result in an appropriate pose. Importantly, however, it was in 1864 that Paris couturier Charles Worth declared the steel-cage crinoline – invented in 1856 and popularized by his most illustrious client, Empress Eugénie – dead. He began to design gowns with straight fronts, moving the fullness from women’s skirts to the back, supported by a horsehair pad bustle.

The huge success of this painting is due to its original and rather mysterious composition (What is the young woman sitting on and who is she to allow herself to be painted this way?), as well as to the astonishing color scheme, a bright red jacket borrowed from a zouave's costume and the dull green surroundings.

Although many people see Ingres's influence in the pose, particularly in the nonchalant right arm dangling over the black satin skirt or in the reflection in the mirror, contemporary critics saw other derivations for this friend of Manet and Degas.

Costumed in the latest style and surrounded by fashionable decorative objects, the Marquise de Miramon wears a rose-colored, ruffled peignoir, or dressing gown. Around her neck are a black lace scarf and a silver cross. Reflecting the new European fascination with Japanese art, behind her is a Japanese screen depicting cranes on a gold ground, and on the mantelpiece are several pieces of Japanese ceramics. The needlework on the Louis XVI stool indicates that the subject is a noble woman of leisure, and the eighteenth-century terracotta bust suggests her husband's aristocratic heritage.
Thérèse-Stephanie-Sophie Feuillant (1836 – 1912) was from a wealthy bourgeois family. She inherited a fortune from her father and in 1860 she married Réné de Cassagne de Beaufort, Marquis de Miramon. She poses in the Château de Paulhac, Auvergne, her husband's family seat.
Tissot painted many fashionable women during his career, but he held this work in particularly high regard. In 1866, he wrote to the Miramon family for permission to borrow the painting and submit it to the Paris World Fair, where it was seen in public for the first time. The family kept this letter from Tissot along with a swatch of the Marquise's pink velvet gown. Today, the fabric swatch and the painting are in the collection of the Getty Museum and the letter is part of the collection of the Getty Research Institute.

In Evening, also known as The Ball, Tissot depicts a young woman wearing a luxuriant yellow dress, arriving at a society event. The extreme femininity of the main character is emphasised through a skilful interplay of curves. Her wide fan, placed virtually in the centre of the painting, continues the curve of her shoulders. In the bottom left hand corner, her long train forms an impressive rising arabesque. Amidst the ribbons and lace some fabric is revealed, with Japanese influenced motifs of fish in water. This detail should be seen as a metaphor for the scene before us: the young woman will slip effortlessly into this social circle where her beauty is certain to attract attention.

Of her male companion, we see only his back and his white hair. Concealed in this way, this character's role seems to be reduced to no more than opening the doors to high society for his partner. Moreover, the young woman is already detaching herself from him, as she looks into the distance.

In the background, two women at the centre of the crowd are considering the latest guest as a potential rival.

The Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, in the United States, has a painting very close to this one in its collections, whose title, The Ambitious Woman, reveals a little more of Tissot's intention: to put forward a critical and trenchant view of the salons of his time.
