having grown up in a culture in which cowardly, bigoted weasels too often get to say and do whatever they want without consequence -- and where the targeted & bullied are just expected to take it -- cowardly bigoted weaselly creep Tommy learned something new yesterday! #TheMoreYouKnow

It's like watching that "Confident in my ability to properly tennis" tweet, playing out in reality.

Tweet from Jason at Longwall26:

"Confident in my ability to properly tennis, I take the court. I smile at my opponent. Serena does not return the gesture. She'd be prettier if she did, I think. She serves. The ball passes cleanly through my skull, killing me instantly."

This was in response to a poll some years back showing that like 1 in 8, (or 12% of) men thought they'd be able to beat Serena Williams at tennis. Which is ridiculous, but so are a lot of men, unfortunately.

Airport question I posed yesterday to the #NWAV54 UK contingent is which UK city has a similar latitude to Montreal? Answer: None! All of the UK is north of Montreal (latitude 45.5). Brighton is latitude 50.8. #notlinguistics #themoreyouknow

Job skills (online classes and certificates, resumes and cover letters) immigration forms and medical/disability applications are big needs right now for the public, and library workers help with all these things (or refer to other orgs when needed). #TheMoreYouKnow

Public libraries have kids under 16 who visit regularly without parents to use computers and check out items. If their parent needs to be present for them to do that under Bill 28 in Alberta, those kids may stop using the library and visit less safe spaces. #TheMoreYouKnow

Interestingly, I recently learned the phrase “beyond the pale” was popularized (although not the first use) in Ireland, when everything outside of Dublin was considered beyond the pale… and full of the uncivilized Irish 🤨 #TheMoreYouKnow
When the Normans invaded Ireland in the twelfth century, they were not as successful as they hoped: the English possessions were gradually reduced to an area round Dublin.
This was originally protected by a palisade (or Pale), and (in English eyes at least)
Ireland was divided unto the civilised part within the Pale and the barbarian part
"Beyond the Pale", which became a common phrase for the Elizabethans, if not earlier.
