The giant of telephone kiosks : K4 at Whitley Bay, North Tyneside.Designed in the late-1920s and following on from the K2 kiosk, designed by architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the mighty K4 cast iron "Post Office" was an attempt to integrate a GPO telephone kiosk with stamp vending machines and a post box. A batch of only fifty were produced in 1930 but the K4 was never seen as successful; stamps got damp and stuck and the vending apparatus was apparently distracting to those attempting to make a call. The sheer size, weight and cost also mitigated against the design and the GPO would go on to introduce the much lighter K6 kiosk in 1935.

Rare in the first place survivors 'on the street' are now even rarer with only a handful surviving. This, outside Whitley Bay Metro station, is sadly badly vandalised - the phone and vending machines no longer in use but it still appears to function as a pillar box.

The photo shows the stamp and post box elevation - with "GR" cast in gold above and "stamps" in the illuminated glass panel. To the right elevation the words "Post Office" appear in the panel, surmounted by a pierced Crown), and showing that the phone box door is chained closes as most of the glass panes are now broken. The box is Grade 2 Listed.
