Some Stone Age cultures burned their homes and everything inside every 80 years or so, sometimes even entire settlements, only to be rebuilt and destroyed again. What could have driven them to set fire to everything they owned? Maybe disease, or maybe rituals. Which means "ghosts" in anthro nerd

As useful as Thomsen's Three-Age system 🏺 is, it also may have added to a disproportionate perception of how loooooong that period we usually sum up as #StoneAge really was ...
Drawing of a measuring tape, segments marked from 2.45 million years ago to "you are here". Drawings of stone tools dominate most of the tape, only in the very last segments, close to the "you are here" mark, a Palaeolithic "venus" figurine, Palaeolithic cave art, Stonehenge, and the Egyptian pyramids are added. An arrow marks a point about 300k, with a note reading "Homo sapiens", another one somewhere at 5,000, "written records".

I'm fascinated by the generations that pass between the paragraphs of history. For example, Mesolithic foraging cultures coexisted in an uneasy balance with early Neolithic farmers, retreating beyond a buffer of a day's travel. From arm's length they traded, intermarried, and raided for generations.
