So into round 2 of #MinCup26 and I'm going to keep with my 'what's the more interesting crystal structure' criteria. I have always had a thing for 3-fold symmetry so am a sucker for the trigonal carbonate groups - #Azurite gets my vote over #Sphalerite today.

Vote #Sphalerite for #MinCup26! Its zinc-blende structure is more than a mineralogical classic; in their 2026 @actacrystb.iucr.org work, Naydenov show that in ZnSe it can host Cr, Co and Fe together, yielding homogeneous crystals for 2–5 μm laser applications. journals.iucr.org/b/issue….

So hard to decide! The blue hue of Azurite is mesmerizing. But I played the trumpet in my youth and young adulthood, and I still have a love for the brass instruments. So #Sphalerite gets my vote for the brass connection

I'm totally into blue Renaissance art blues, but I simply love #sphalerite more, and ore minerals are so wonderful anyway. Thus I'm #TeamNotBlue today. Btw, are there any actually hard minerals in #MinCup this year?
