Wowza! Take a look at this monster filament of plasma that just erupted off the Sun – gorgeous! The main eruption appears to be directed north, but modelling efforts will soon reveal if any part of it is heading towards Earth. #spaceweather #astronomy

The Sun has really stepped up over the past few days, with frequent solar flares including a strong X-class event! A selection of these flares produced Earth-directed eruptions, expected to trigger a strong geomagnetic storm (bringing aurora) on the 31st! #spaceweather

When aurora turns red like this, you’re looking at oxygen glowing more than 120 miles above Earth. During the geomagnetic storm on November 11, the high-altitude reds were the strongest I’ve ever seen. #aurora #auroraborealis #alaska #spaceweather
Snow-covered spruce trees rise from the bottom edges of the frame, their dark trunks and branches heavily coated in thick white snow, reaching upward toward the sky. The photograph is taken from a low angle, so the trees lean inward from the sides, creating a sense of looking up from the forest floor.

Above them, the night sky is filled with bright aurora during a geomagnetic storm. A vivid green glow spreads across the lower portion of the sky, especially near the horizon and around the tops of the trees. Higher up, intense red and pink auroral light dominates, forming broad, luminous bands that sweep diagonally across the sky. A strong vertical arc of red and pink runs near the center, fading into softer gradients of orange and rose tones. The green and red layers blend in places, creating subtle yellowish transitions.

Small white stars are scattered across the darker portions of the sky between the auroral curtains.

I'm seeing talk of aurora tonight, and while K-indices are 8 to 9+, Bz swung pretty far north when the CME arrived (+55), so i'm dubious there will be a show. #spaceweather
