In a historic first, the James Webb Space Telescope has performed a direct mass measurement of a black hole in the early Universe. Located 13 billion light-years away, this black hole weighs in at a massive 50 million times the mass of the Sun. #JWST #SpaceNews #Astronomy 1/4
Image description: Image showing hundreds of bright objects of different size, colour, and shape on the black background of space. Colours range from white to deep red. Shapes include elliptical, spiral, dot-like, dash-like, and arcuate.Three objects in the central part of the image are called out with small white boxes that contain images of the three objects. From top to bottom these are labeled QSO1A, QSO1B, and QSO1C. At the centre of each box is a tiny, circular red dot. QSO1A (top) is notably larger, brighter, and clearer than the other two. QSO1B, in the middle, is the smallest and fuzziest, and is somewhat washed out by the light of a larger white object next to it.]

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has found the strongest evidence yet for "black hole stars!" Data from a "little red dot" named GLIMPSE-17775 suggests it's a supermassive black hole enshrouded in a dense, hot cocoon of gas. 🔴✨ #JWST #Astronomy #SpaceNews 1/3
A field of galaxies against the black background of space. In the center is a bright-white elliptical galaxy that is the core of the Abell S1063 galaxy cluster. Around the core are short, curved red lines, which are distant background galaxies magnified and warped by gravitational lensing. A couple of foreground stars appear large and bright with Webb’s signature eight-point diffraction spike pattern. Toward the very bottom, slightly off center toward the right, is a small red dot that is highlighted by an orange square outline. A larger orange square in the top right corner shows the object in more detail. The object, labeled “GLIMPSE-17775” looks like a fuzzy red dot with a yellow core.

🌌 Astronomers using NASA’s Webb telescope estimate that the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS could have formed 10 to 12 billion years ago! Born during the universe's “cosmic noon,” it might be the oldest comet ever discovered. ☄️ #JWST #SpaceNews #Astronomy 1/4
Researchers used the NIRSpec (Near-Infrared Spectrograph) instrument on NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to map specific chemical contents of comet 3I/ATLAS as it moved away from the Sun.

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope caught exoplanet HD 80606 b getting roasted! As this extreme "hot Jupiter" plunges close to its host star on a highly elliptical orbit, Webb observed its temperature skyrocket by a staggering 1,100°F. 🔥🪐 #JWST #SpaceNews 1/4
This artist’s concept imagines exoplanet HD 80606 b orbiting its Sun-like star. During recent observations by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, the planet was near periastron, the point in its orbit when it passes closest to the star. As HD 80606 b approached periastron, its temperature jumped 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit, causing environmental changes that scientists are still analyzing.
