Preconceptions

Before you were born
I dreamed in neat lines.
Clever, handsome, funny.
Maybe building bridges, healing hearts,
charting stars from a cockpit seat.
You would charm a room, make friends with ease,
be the boy everyone loved:
the brochure version of joy.

Then you arrived: soft and new,
a heartbeat wrapped in wonder.
All I wanted for you was love and
happiness,
happiness,
happiness:
your laugh, your light, your life.

Then came a word – autistic.
I thought my dreams had shattered
like glass in a quiet room.
Would your silence ever end?
Would you walk into the world
without me holding your hand?
I feared your life was over
before it had begun.

But what I got was everything.
You are not broken.
You are not less.
You are not the end of a dream.
You are the beginning of a greater one.
You are funny, confident,
reaching upwards, outwards
a skyscraper of spirit rising in ways I never imagined.

The word did not steal my joy.
It is your gift:
your lens, your rhythm, your way
of moving through the world
with a brilliance I never knew to wish for.

I had preconceptions.
But you showed me the truth.
And the truth is beautiful.
Just like you.
