New studies have been published explaining the recent decline in Antarctic sea ice, the migration of warm Circumpolar Deep Water, the undermining of floating ice shelves and record breaking glacial retreat. drtomharris.substack.com/…. #climatechange #Antarctica #sealevelrise #oceans

New studies predict faster Antarctic melting and global sea level rise

New papers spell trouble for every part of Antarctica's ice system, from sea ice decline to heating channels under the ice, record glacial retreat to collapsing buttresses. Sea levels are rising fast.

This is one of my favorite ways to visualize #SeaLevelRise... With another year of verified water levels at Key West behind us now (as of today), here's the updated version of this chart I've been making for the past decade or so. 🧪🌊 [1/3]
"Heatmap" chart showing the number of hours per day from 1913-2025 that the water level spent above the mean high tide (using the current 1983-2001 epoch) at Key West FL.

Antarctica is experiencing abrupt changes, suggesting regime shifts in a number of critical systems. A recent review paper lays out the evidence and the likely implications for these changes. drtomharris.substack.com/…. #Antarctica #climatechange #sealevelrise #icesheet #penguins

A new satellite study has identified an alarming loss of global freshwater with implications for society, ecology and sea level rise. Four mega-drying regions are identified, all in the northern hemisphere. drtomharris.substack.com/…. #climatechange #drying #drought #sealevelrise

Continental Drying - the world is losing freshwater at dangerous rates

Climate change is driving profound changes across the whole Earth system including the water cycle which is now changing at unprecedented rates with impacts on society, ecology and sea level rise.

“The [sea level] rise we saw in 2024 was higher than we expected. Every year is a little bit different, but what’s clear is that the ocean continues to rise, and 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙚 𝙞𝙨 𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙛𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙛𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧.”—Josh Willis, NASA (Emphasis added) #ClimateCrisis #SeaLevelRise

NASA Analysis Shows Unexpected Amount of Sea Level Rise in 2024 - NASA

Last year’s increase was due to an unusual amount of ocean warming, combined with meltwater from land-based ice such as glaciers.

Following up on my recent post about #SeaLevelRise in Key West FL, here is the similar chart for San Francisco CA, home of the country's longest consecutive tide gauge record. Although monthly tide data go back to 1854, hourly data used for these calculations begin in 1898. Impressive! 🧪🌊 [1/2]

Ironic indeed. 98% of Saudi Aramco exports, as well as Rotterdam, Houston, Galveston, Singapore, Shanghai in danger zones. “This analysis shows that relying on fossil fuels in a warming world is a path to disaster, not energy security." 🌏 @iccinet.bsky.social #ClimateCrisis #sealevelrise
