AI agents are checking the scientific literature - and spotting decades-old errors

For decades, chemists have relied on handbook values for a molecule’s boiling point to identify substances and plan processes such as distillation. But an artificial-intelligence model has revealed that some trusted numbers in one reference database have been wrong all along. Sebastian Pios, a theoretical chemist at Zhejiang Lab in Hangzhou, China, was using an AI system to predict the boiling points of several molecules when it began producing values that clashed with long-accepted entries in a 75-year-old reference database. At first, he thought the model was wrong. But when he manually checked the original literature, he found that the reference data were wrong, not the AI model. In two other cases, Pios’s AI model spotted errors in older papers and reference books — mistakes that have made their way into the scientific canon. One was a typo in a paper; another was incorrect values of century-old boiling-point measurements. Both errors are likely to have caused researchers using the database “a lot of trouble”, says Pios. Scientific paper promoting free meals for Nobel Prize raises eyebrows

The paper, titled “Nobel Peace Prize 2026: Free Meal Program by the National Nutrition Agency Building Smart Business for Food Security Industry and Indonesia’s Economic Growth”, listed the President as its first author alongside researchers affiliated with the Home Ministry, an international publisher as well as universities in Malaysia and Indonesia. It was posted in March on Social Science Research Network (SSRN), an open access research platform used by researchers as a repository for early-stage research and preprints. The paper upholds the free meals program as a means of strengthening Indonesia’s food security that at the same time stimulates economic growth. The study used qualitative methods, using interviews and policy analysis to support its findings. However, it also features several posters that appear to be generated by artificial intelligence. The paper contains passages resembling prompts for generative AI text tools, raising questions about the authenticity of the document. Jeff Dean Leaves Google to Automate the Scientific Method With Discovery Loop

Jeff Dean, Google’s chief scientist and one of the central figures in modern AI infrastructure, is leaving the company after nearly 27 years to co-found Discovery Loop, a startup whose stated goal is to automate the experimental loops of scientific research itself. The departure was announced on August 5, 2026 as part of a broader reshuffle of Google’s AI leadership, with the company confirming it will back the new venture as a founding investor and Cloud partner. Dean is not leaving alone. Three other senior Google AI figures are co-founding the company with him: Sanjay Ghemawat, a Google Senior Fellow and Dean’s collaborator on much of the company’s foundational computing infrastructure; Oriol Vinyals, VP of research at Google DeepMind and a technical lead on Gemini; and Quoc Le, a co-founder of Google Brain and the scientist behind Google’s AutoML-Zero project.
