August 7, 2012 - The Blazers have hired Terry Stotts as head coach on Tuesday, becoming the 14th head coach in team history. #RipCity #ThisDateinBlazersHistory

Stotts replaces Kaleb Canales, who went 8-15 in an interim role after Nate McMillan was fired, after the Blazers fell short of expectations last season. McMillan coached Portland from 2005, compiling a 266-269 record.

Stotts and Canales emerged as the finalists for the job, interviewing with Portland owner Paul Allen over the weekend at the London Olympics. Canales has been in the Trail Blazers’ organization since 2005. It is unclear if he will remain with the club.

With a 115-168 record as coach of the Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks, Stotts has spent the past four seasons as an assistant with the Dallas Mavericks under Rick Carlisle, which included a 2010/11 NBA Finals Title. Carlisle was an assistant with the Blazers from 1995 to 1997 under PJ Carlesimo.

Stotts coached Atlanta to a 52-85 record after replacing Lon Kruger in December 2002. He was an assistant with Golden State before getting his second chance as a head coach with Milwaukee in 2005. He led the Bucks to the playoffs in 2006, but was fired toward the end of the following season.

Throw Back Blazers Thursday ... In the days following the trade of the final player from the expansion season, many had thoughts to share. Between players traded, acquired, or left in limbo, each had a comment regarding the trade and dispersal draft on August 5, 1976. #RipCity

Geoff Petrie - "Only one regret. I wish we could have won more games for the fans. They definitely deserved it." The first Blazers player that became synonymous with the famed 'Rip City' reminisced about his two 51 point games, or scoring the 2,000th point his rookie season, but saved a few volleys at the Portland front office. "Over the summer I started seeing what a sham it was with the people in the Lloyd Building. I found out they weren't really interested in me as a person."

Jack Ramsay - “I think it was a great day for Portland,” declared Ramsay. “Lucas is the key. We have acquired a player who has proved himself to be a superior strong forward and who is a very adequate center. That’s an understatement when I say adequate. I say that only in terms of what we already have, in view of the fact we have Bill Walton.”

Bill Walton - "The two players we picked up are two of the best young, big players around. I'm looking forward to them being on the team even though they play my position." When asked about the loss of Petrie, Walton said, "I'm sorry to see him go. His leaving helps our team in a certain way and hurts our team in another way." Despite hard feelings during Walton's rookie season, Walton and Petrie had become close friends, going rafting and camping together.

Steve Hawes - "It was quite a surprise to me. I wasn't expecting anything like this. I hate leaving Portland because I think the Blazers are on the verge of doing great things." Hawes talked of when the Blazers were healthy for a small stretch during the 75/76 season, saying, " I think all the frustrations from six years will be nullified this season. I became convinced of that last season when we had everyone healthy and went on a seven game winning streak."

Sidney Wicks - "What are they going to do with all those high-priced ballplayers?" Wicks said when reached at his Los Angeles home. Having played out his original 5-year contract, Wicks is entering the option year. He and the Blazers have been negotiating with no deal. "I don't expect to be traded but something has to be done. I'll play for whoever pays me the most money."

John Johnson - "All I can say about the trade is the Blazers gave up a great player for nothing." The former Portland forward was traded for Steve Hawes, who was traded with Petrie to Atlanta. "I'm sure the contract problems and his bad knee had a lot to do with the trade."

Maurice Lucas - “I’m very pleased to have been selected by Portland,” Lucas said by telephone from a basketball camp in Philadelphia. “In fact, I’m rather honored that the Blazers traded certain people for me. I just talked with Jack Ramsay and I feel very comfortable with Portland. He said they want me for a big forward or a backup center. I’m looking forward to it.”

Moses Malone - Listed as a 6'-11" center during his rookie season, the same position as Walton, Malone has played forward too, but, "...basically, I feel more comfortable at center. I'm not saying I'm a better ball player (than Walton), I've seen Bill play on television and I think we can fit in together."

August 5, 1976 - Geoff Petrie, the last Original Blazers player, was traded along with back up center Steve Hawes to the Atlanta Hawks for the second pick in the ABA Dispersal Draft. #RipCity #ThisDateinBlazersHistory

With the pick the Blazers selected Maurice Lucas formally with the Kentucky Colonels. With their own selection, in the fifth spot, the Blazers selected Moses Malone of the Spirits of StLouis.

Petrie was the Blazers first pick in the 1970 NBA Draft from Princeton University and held all the clubs scoring records at the time of the trade. Among them were most points in a season (2,031) and in a game with 51 points, hitting that mark twice in 1973.

In addition, Petrie was listed as the career leader in scoring, with 9,732 points, as well as the career leader in FGM (3,970), FGA (8,719), FTM (1,792), FTA (2,225), and Assists (2,057), Games (446), and Minutes (16,787). Other than games played and minutes, Petrie is still ranked in Top-10 in those categories today.

Petrie shared the NBA ROY Award in 1971 with Boston Celtics center Dave Cowens and twice played in the annual All-Star game (1971 and ’74). Petrie became the first Portland player to earn a starting position in the 1974 game.

Steve Hawes joined the Blazers last season when the Blazers traded John Johnson to the Houston Rockets. Hawes played for the University of Washington prior to joining Rockets in the 1974 NBA draft.

Lucas and Malone each had played the past two seasons in the ABA, Lucas initially with St Louis before a trade to Kentucky. Malone, the first player to join the pro ranks from High School, played with Utah Stars during his rookie season but joined St. Louis when Stars folded 11 games into the final ABA season.

August 4, 1989 - The Blazers annual Rookie game found a new venue and featured an update to the dunk contest. #RipCity #ThisDateinBlazersHistory

Playing outside at Civic Stadium for the first time, the Red Squad, led by the Blazers first round pick in Byron Irvin and his 15 points, defeated the White Squad despite 20 points by Mark Bryant, and 18 more from the Blazers second round pick, Clifford Robinson. Eleven of the 19 players competing this evening were named to the Summer League roster.

The Blazers put a twist on the dunk contest, making current Portland players Clyde Drexler and Jerome Kersey compete against former Blazers great Billy Ray Bates and the Continental Basketball Assoc. dunk champion Daren Queenan with three specific dunks. Each player competed with a style dunk, a distance dunk, before the final height dunk.

All four players made it to the height phase, even clearing the 10'-6" without an issue, even getting to 11'. Once the basket was raised to 11'-6", Bates and Queenan failed to deliver. Drexler, on his first try, hit 11'-6", while Kersey took two attempts. At 11'-7", Drexler bleared the rim, barely, while Kersey failed to dunk.

August 4, 2020 - The Blazers earned their second victory in the NBA Bubble, defeating the Houston Rockets. The win keeps Portland within 1.5 games of the final playoff spot. #RipCity #ThisDateinBlazersHistory

Damian Lillard led the Portland with 21 points, with CJ McCollum adding 20 more. Jusuf Nurkić scored 18 points and grabbed 19 rebounds, becoming the 14th Portland player to reach that slightly odd combo for a second time. Nurkić last reached that point/rebound combo on January 1, 2019.

August 4, 1978 - The Blazers front office made the following announcement ... "The Portland Trail Blazers announced today that Bill Walton has asked to be traded prior to the 1978-79 season and the club has informed him it will attempt to abide by his request." #RipCity #ThisDateinBlazersHistory

Only 14 months removed from the NBA Finals MVP, Walton, through his advisors Jack Scott and John Bassett, released the statement, "This was the most difficult decision I have ever had to make regarding my basketball career." Scott added that, "Bill's primary concern in which team he selects will the medical practices and working conditions which exist on that team." When asked Walton's reason for wanting to leave Portland, Scott replied, "It certainly is not finances and not geography."

Both Scott and Bassett admitted that Walton has expressed an interest in seven clubs he would be interested in going to. The seven teams are Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Golden State, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Denver. Walton has a trade-veto in his contract. The Lakers and Nuggets have already issued statements that they are not pursuing Walton.

Walton last took the court with the Blazers in Game 2 of the Western Conference Semifinals series against the Seattle Super Sonics. Walton limped off the court after only 15 minutes of action.

August 4, 2005 - The trade of forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim to the New Jersey Nets has been put on hold after Abdur-Rahim failed his physical. #RipCity #ThisDateinBlazersHistory

The Nets doctors have found scar tissue in his right knee. While the New Jersey doctors are concerned his knees could be come arthritic, Abdur-Rahim's agent noted that, "it's a non-issue for us," said Aaron Goodwin. "There's nothing any different with Shareef that hasn't been consistent with his health for the last nine years in the league."

The Nets have until August 12 to complete the trade.

In the meantime, the Blazers announced the signings of free agent guards Juan Dixon and Charles Smith. Dixon has played the past three years with the Washington Wizards while Smith was playing in Greece and Italy the past two seasons. Prior to playing overseas, Smith played three games for the Blazers in 2003.

August 4, 1976 - With the ABA Dispersal Draft tomorrow, rumors of potential trades, and who the Blazers will select with the fifth pick, are flying around Portland. #RipCity #ThisDateinBlazersHistory

According to the sports radio program "Calling All Sports" on KOIN radio, the Blazers are prepared to trade Geoff Petrie to the Kansas City Kings and Sidney Wicks to the Los Angeles Lakers. Both players are entering the option year on their respective contracts.

The Blazers deny a report that Petrie has been traded to the Kings, though Harry Glickman admitted that the Kings doctors talked with the Blazers doctors about Petrie's knees. Regarding Wicks, Glickman said, "There has been no trade. The report is 100 percent inaccurate."

With the fifth pick in the dispersal draft, the Blazers are expected to select either forward Marvin Barnes or guard Ron Boone, both from the Spirits of St. Louis. Artis Gilmore, late of the Kentucky Colonels, is expected to be the first pick by the Chicago Bulls, with the Atlanta Hawks having the second pick.

The Hawks are rumored to be looking at either Moses Malone, or Barnes, if they do pick a player. Hubie Brown, the new Atlanta coach, coached the ABA Colonels the past two seasons, and is known not to care for either Barnes or Maurice Lucas, whom he coached on the Colonels. Reports are that the Hawks might be willing to trade the pick instead of paying $350K to select Malone.

Glickman noted that, “Everybody was shopping today and jockeying for position but little was accomplished. Everyone is waiting to see what the Hawks will do." If the Hawks select Malone, then Kansas City would select Boone and Detroit Pistons will select Maurice Lucas, leaving Barnes for Portland.

August 3, 2005 - The Blazers continue to over-haul a 27-55 team, waiving guards Derek Anderson and Nick Van Exel, one day after trading Shareef Abdur-Rahim, which has been put on hold. #RipCity #ThisDateinBlazersHistory

Portland waived Anderson under the new collective bargaining agreement, allowing a team to not only waive the player, but to have the contract removed from the teams salary cap. Nicknamed as the "luxury tax amnesty clause," Anderson is the first player in the league to have his contract removed from a team. The Blazers will continue to pay for the final two seasons, but Anderson can sign with any other team as a free agent.

Van Exel, who had one non-guaranteed year left on his contract, was waived outright after playing 53 games with the Blazers last season, before an injury sidelined him for the final 25 games.

The Blazers are looking towards second year guard Sebastian Telfair, rookie Jarrett Jack, and third year guard Juan Dixon, to replace the two veterans.

Reports are that Abdur-Rahim has failed his physical in New Jersey. The Nets have until August 12 to complete the trade.

August 3, 1976 - Wally Walker scored 43 points, and grabbed 13 rebounds, to lead the Blazers / Milwaukee Bucks team past the NBA Rookies team in the Los Angeles Summer league. #RipCity #ThisDateinBlazersHistory

Blazers assistant coach Jack McKinney was excited about the former UVA player, noting Walker was "..a strong, offensive-styled forward with good moves." McKinney also said Walker was a good leaper for his size but not a strong rebounder, like Lloyd Neal is.

McKinney is also impressed with other Portland rookies on the team, including Johnny Davis ("great ability with tremendous speed"), and Robin Jones ("easily our best center down here"). Two other rookies that have received notice, before minor injuries sidelined the players, are Major Jones and Al DeWitt.

Jeff Tyson, the Blazers third round pick from Western Michigan, has been excused from camp after his wife and mother-in-law were involved in a car accident. Tyson's mother-in-law passed away, while his wife Mary is still in a coma.

August 3, 1993 - The Blazers announce the signing of New Jersey Nets free agent center Chris Dudley to a 7-year, $11M contract. #RipCity #ThisDateinBlazersHistory

A day after trading Mario Elie to the Houston Rockets, which created the cap space to sign Dudley, the Blazers signed the six year veteran. Dudley averaged 3.5 points and 7.2 rebounds in a backup role for the Nets, but Blazers VP Geoff Petrie said, "We believe Chris will bring a tremendous amount of rebounding, defense, hustle, and effort to our team. Dudley added, "I wanted to play for a winner. I wanted a chance to play for a championship team and I think Portland has an excellent chance of at least contending."

Dudley rejected a reported 7-year, $21M from the Nets, where he has played the past three and half seasons. Nets GM Willis Reed said it became obvious recently that Dudley didn't want to stay in New Jersey.

The contract includes an opt-out after one season, which the NBA says is circumventing the salary cap, and plans to appeal the contract.
