Comfortably Sooted

The asphalt in this town is caked crimson.
The soot has fled cold cook-pots,
coating instead
what were once baked earthen red
to now — torched — brick walls.
The riot, satiated,
has left these cadaverous streets
of blistered ghosts — now —
squats permanently
inside abandoned stomach pits,
in distant ghettos of eyes
of the bereaved.
And in another happy town,
a riot of colours blowing
in air on clothes on faces in laughter
on platters on facades on the ground
firm
beneath our feet
ensures that we comfortably
— soot-in-shaded-eyes —
don’t understand grief.

The Rich Are Having a Riot They say the riot started when the crowd broke ranks, a chant, a stone,
a window screamed. But that was only
the echo. The real riot was earlier, velvet-draped,
sommelier-certified.
It wore cufflinks.
It giggled in tax havens. It toasted on rooftops
over streets it never walked. The rich were having a riot, not the kind with tear gas, but truffle canapés,
derivatives and rooftop DJs.
Their nights sparkled
brighter than a Molotov's arc. They rioted with interest rates, with exit strategies, with contracts that left the rest of us
counting coins and casualties. And when the match came, a body on the pavement, a march met with batons, a cry caught on camera,
they called that the outrage.
They mean the broken glass.
Never the broken backs. Never the riot of comfort held like a crown
over hungry heads. They forget: every fire starts
with heat ignored.
Every riot is just the poor
replying to the invitation.
